There seems to be an increase in the number of fissures or vents, over the past few hours.I'm no expert, but the whole area near the main fissure looks looks to be very unstable.

The situation in Iceland is escalating with Bardarbunga now causing grave concern. A large eruption could occur in the near future, with flooding possibly causing damage to the infrastructure, according to a number of observers.

Another big 5.5 quake in the caldera this morning.
Meanwhile sulphur dioxide from the fissure eruption is causing problems. The Norwegians can smell it. Fortunately for us the high pressure is keeping it away

It's probably unlikely they could divert this slow moving but enormous mass.
There was a case in Iceland back in 1973 when the Harbour of Heimaey island was spared such a fate when the residents that did not evacuate spent weeks spraying an estimated 6 million cubic meters of sea water onto the lava eventually diverting it away from, and saving the harbour.
