There was a case in Iceland back in 1973 when the Harbour of Heimaey island was spared such a fate when the residents that did not evacuate spent weeks spraying an estimated 6 million cubic meters of sea water onto the lava eventually diverting it away from, and saving the harbour.

Bunga Bunga continues to rumble

Another large 5.4 in the Caldera this morning which continues its sinking process

I'm not sure... seems this could go on for ever!  The caldera seems to have dropped 30m or so and it appears that it will keep going.  Not sure what is expected to happen, but even the Iceland MetO have a range of options that they expect could occur.

I would expect the current eruption to go on for weeks at least. Whether anything significant happens in terms of caldera collapse is anyone's guess. There is more magma entering the system than erupting currently so I'd expect the quakes to continue for a while. It may be when they stop that we need to hold our breath...

It is amazing watching that video, I think the IMO have said it's the start of a brand new volcano, which is facinating in itself to see.

Probably we find a patern if we check the hitorical data from 3 last weeks we see the earthquakes above 4 were deeper and faraway from the center and surface as time goes by, these are getting near the surface and the caldeira, even the last one a few hours ago of 5.2 in deph an in the sistmatic location of these events at NE.ferhaps a steady subsidience and a sinking caldeira.

Interesting point.
Seismicity does seem to be more concentrated near the centre.
The dyke seems to be taking the pressure off, as it seems to be maintaining a good flow.
If this flow suddenly stopped or was cut off due to a sinking near the caldera, it might be time to worry, according to some reports.

I would enjoy,as many others, seeing a spectacular in that region.

If it does go bad,then obviously it could be a disaster to many.

What happens is out of our control, eitherway.

The best we can do is learn more from instances.

This could have saved a number of people on Ontake.

When it is very windy in Iceland many of the smaller quakes are "missed" and I think they may get added manually later. The 5.5 was easy enough to spot (although I think it is actually the second largest so far).
