My understanding is that it doesn't sleep, in the sense of doing nothing. It undergoes a very long process of "reloading" the magma chamber,
As the article says, the process is ongoing and the last eruption was around 640k years ago, with a cycle of around 700k years.
Unless you come up with an elixir of eternal life I don't think it's going to be a problem for you - or any of us. More likely that the consequences of global warming will hit us first.
