I have to say, we’ve been in our house since 2001 and I’ve never seen the ponds around Epsom common like this. We’ve our annual street party tomorrow and with a thousand acres of EpsomAnd Ashtead commons on our doorstep we’ve made sure no one BBQ’s or intends to light fire pits in the evening.

I’ve never seen the grass so brown or the trees leaves withered like this.

They only turn off during big freeze which the water levels dropping again.  I wonder if they banned wasting fresh water this time?

Hmm. 1998: summer after an el Nino. 2007: summer after El Niño. 2016: summer after El Niño. 1988, 2024…

With the notable exception of 1983 I’d say summers after el ninos have been generally shite.

….though I will say. I’m a little surprised about the BBC articles regarding Wisley and the amount of days without rain as I was stuck in a Q on the M25 at the new A3/M25 junction at Wisley last week when we had a heavy downpour albeit about ten mins.

ECM 0z going for 35c Friday you can normally add 2c to ECM max temp charts. Could Friday be the hottest day of the year?

Also Wetterzentrale.de have improved the chart so you can see it much more clearly now. 👍

Those second years, which 2027 will be, have a pretty poor recent history in British summers. The big exception being 1983 (notably that event started and peaked much later than others, which maybe has something to do with it). So I am pessimistic about 2027 for that reason.

The years after - 1984, 1999, 2008 etc - are La Niña years. They seem a bit more of a mixed bag.

I’d love for 2027 to buck the trend though. And it’s almost certainly not going to be as cold as 1998 or as wet as 2007.

Our maximum temps from today (Met O)

21/19/19/22/26/24/21 so no heatwave again but a decent week coming up, rain tomorrow then I'm hoping for blue sky and to get rid of this persistent SW wind which blows strongly every day!

Not far off another 30C day today: 29.2C in Hull is the highest I have seen so far. Even if today doesn't make it, tomorrow almost certainly will and GFS has us on 40 days by next Sunday.

The 12z GFS in full on desert mode for Thursday... very hot with subzero dewpoints. Fires galore, I expect! FWIW 37/-2 is just 8% RH. By comparison Vegas (in an actual desert) is forecast around 20% RH for the next few days!

Of course if geography is the issue then maybe it's the twentieth or something for Arizona.

The irony (frustrating in some ways if it's the count you're after) is that hotter places may have fewer heatwaves as they merge into longer ones.

I imagine the wider heatwave thresholds haven't been met in many places (a focus on the SE for the 27s and 28s).

I had one heatwave in May, one in June, two in July and am awaiting number 5, which now looks as if it won't come until later next week. 2 days doesn't count. 10 days doesn't count as two.

Widespread 39s on Thursday on 12Z GFS. It is surely overdoing it - none of the other models have 850s anywhere close to the 22C GFS is showing.
