The winter of 76-77 was a cold snowy winter.

The winter of 90-91 was cold & snowy.

The winter of 95-96 was cold & snowy.

I wonder if this upcoming one can replicate them

My home office also faces west so it's pleasant in the morning when I open the windows. It has a door into the kitchen extension and internal doors into the front sitting room. With the front windows and kitchen bifolds open there is usually a breeze flowing through. Very still today though and felt hotter than yesterday when I strolled down the garden. I put the big garden brolly up on the deck outside the window which keeps the direct sun off until late afternoon

I also don't struggle to sleep in this weather. I get up at half 5 to take the dog out before it's too hot for her and we sit out on the deck in the evening until late so by the time I get to bed at half 11 or so I'm tired enough to go straight to sleep

These conditions, although becoming much more common in recent years, are something to be enjoyed for me as there is so much of the year to be stuck indoors looking at gloomy skies. I don't care how hot it is, I'd far rather be sat at home working than wasting the best part of 3 hours a day door to door travelling to and from the office. I've had more than enough years of that. The City of London concrete jungle in this type of weather is particularly unpleasant with the heat radiating out of roads and buildings. Much happier dealing with the heat here with the window open, hearing birds calling and the splashing of water in the pond  and watching butterflies, dragonflies and the occasional humming bird hawk moth and hornet going about their business. Much more civilised

The only issue is this year, when the wind is from a westerly direction, then the building site across the road provided a soil addition programme for the garden and car. Also, it sounds like a tank training ground with the caterpillar going up and down. Like today.

I was up early on the coast and noticed the maritime interest has gone up a notch with the addition of three Kings ships mooching around. You could see them but not identify them as they were in incognito mode. Turns out one of the crew members from the tanker was taken off to hospital. The sooner this vessel moves away the better, because I fear an oil spill or Scapa Flow moment. But I'm sure greater minds have this under control. Well I hope so.

So that's a bit of a moan out of the way. The sound of the pond water, birds and bees is great. The parasol and Chusan palm keep off the worst of the sun and I can tap away doing this when I should be editing.

The whole back faces south. The kids' rooms (and the bathroom) are across the back. We knew what we were doing* 😉😍🤪

Means the patio is bathed in sun (when it's out)

* We actually did! After buying our first home without thinking of the way it faced, and finding the back faced east so we soon lost the sun on the patio in early afternoon, we had 'the back needs to be south facing' high on our list of requirements.

PS - this summer is perfect for me.

The pattern seems to be bursts of hot & sunny for a week or two interspersed with a week or two of a mix of pleasant (warmish, sunny spells) and a bit unsettled.

I have "raw dogged" it a few times in the past though, most recently during the Beast from the East in 2018 when the old Glowworm boiler conked out while I was at work (great timing). It got down to 5C in my bedroom and there was frost on the inside of the window when I got up the next day. I ended up buying one of those granny-style gas heaters (and gas bottle) just to keep the place above freezing, as Bad Things happen when pipes freeze as you'll know.

I would still argue that you're not getting the full heat and sweaty experience if you use air con - not tempted just to try one night without it, for old times' sake? 😉
