Some interesting comments about 1976 above. I wasn’t around then, I was born the following year, but I think at least part of its mythos must be that it came after such a long period of generally cold and wet summers. It would be the modern equivalent of having a 1947 winter after the last 16 years of generally mild dross.

I was actually looking at the UK summary maps each day on Roost Weather and it’s notable that the heat was by no means nationwide. Unfortunately I clicked through too many days and am now locked out of the site temporarily!

Amazing temperature rise in the last hour on the north Norfolk coast. Cromer went from 28.9 at 6pm to 34.6 at 7pm. And Weybourne an even more dramatic rise from 26.5 to 34.8 - when the highest all day had been about 28.6! Linked to a change in wind direction from east to WSW.

Think some quotes here greatly unfair on  summer 1976 many like me give great respect to modern day temperatures and summers and yes bring them on but having lived through 1976 I can tell members 76 was a different animal.

I mean some parts of the s/w had no rain whatsoever for 45 days so extreme after an extremely dry year before.

In fact a severe drought act was passed by parliament to ration water with use of local stand pipes the only source.

I think 76 remains special when compared to modern hot summers because imo only guys

1 exceptional heat ok that will be matched and beaten

2 extraordinary duration,  nothing close so far to 76

3 severe drought nothing either matched to 76

4 as heat continued devastating wild forest fires broke out in England some 50 thousand trees lost  in Devon alone

500 million of crops failed put that in real terms a 12 per cent increase in food prices.

The lasting effects of 76 still present as far forward to 2013 with massive changes to scrub and graze and damage still evident on many trees

The "people" commenting on X should in an ideal world be ignored. It's a mixture of paid US coal bots and US/UK ideologues who are totally immune to evidence. I saw some of that tendency today in Eastern Turkey when I visited the "real site of Noah's Ark": people will apply no end of scepticism to things they don't believe, and swallow all sorts of crap if it's in line with their world view.

1. Correct

2. Depends what you mean for duration- last year's whole summer beat 1976. The June-July heatwave was original, granted, in consecutive days > 30 or 32 and that will go, you'll see.

3. Drought and heatwave may be related, but are not necessarily fully interdependent. Our grass is greener than 2022, with no watering, yet we have these records. This is after all, a heatwave thread.

4. Idiot behaviour, poor forest management and other factors lead to fires. I stood in my local stamping grounds watching fire literally emerge from the peaty ground in 76, and it was, granted, horrific. Significant wildlife including large numbers of Dartford Warbler pairs were wiped out from their gorse homes and even at my age then I was in tears. But that doesn't make the year more exceptional.

5. I know- an addition. Third consecutive warmest spring on record, possibly yet another warmest June on record (3 out of 4- warmer than 76, and bearing in mind yes a great August akin to 1997 but otherwise summer 76 was really down to that infamous 2 week spell June-July)

I have nostalgically mused over 1976 for years, (actually decades) until the last few. I bought the book by Evelyn Cox. At the time, it was unprecedented. I don't doubt as Rob has said that if Mayflower Park were still going, we'd have seen something at least as spectacular on Thursday (almost did). And if the 76 set-up had occurred in today's greenhouse, who knows what might have happened? But we can't keep it a shrine forever. 40+ in 2022 is the new fear, I fear.

Bit what made the  76 heatwave even more impactful imo  was that it coincided with a 16- month-long drought. Very little rain had fallen since May 1975 meaning water resources were already seriously depleted and the ground devoid of moisture even before the heat ramped up.

In fact summer 75 had seriously deleted cereal crops before the heat wave.

We were hungry potatoes were scarce my parents as were millions  forced to queue at standpipes in the street just for basic water supplies.

Not fun

As for idiots and fires yes they happen in every decade when the opportunities arise.

As you say if something happened like this with modern summers it doesn’t bare thinking about.

In other news, it looks like there was no Herstmonceux radiosonde at midday today - the exact time most likely to set a record!

Great end of heatwave dicussion folks and good catch on those temperatures Rob.

I assume as we have broken the May record that this thread will go into the Archives?

Southend is not an official station, just an airport one. Shoeburyness is the official one round there but it's not a hot location. Still managed to hit 35C though....

Just heard a rumble of thunder here, so the weather has conformed to the traditional pattern of three hot days and a thunderstorm.

One more very hot day today - the MetO raw has 31 here later (9 or 10C above average), there are 33s in e.g. Norwich, then we're finally back to just plain "very warm" conditions. It's been a remarkable few days, even moreso following hot on the heels of that record-breaking spell in May.

At least this time for once there were storms down here, but the legacy of it lives on... 32 upstairs and 27 downstairs as of 4AM this morning, on a par with that hot couple of days in July 22. I know people in newbuilds will have it even worse, our buildings are just not designed for these conditions.

Just starting to look through some of the statistics for this heatwave.

Wales has had its 2nd, 4th and 10th all time hottest temperatures during this spell.

Currently living at roughly 65m asl North of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Formerly of, Birdlip, highest village in the Cotswolds and snow heaven in winter; Hawkinge in Kent - roof of the South downs and Isles of Scilly, paradise in the UK.

Is anyone keeping track of the number of +30C days we have had so far this year.

Can’t believe the models are spreading hinting at another heatwave. iPhone weather already picking this up.

I'm wondering it's time to start naming heatwaves? A scheme like HW1, HW2.. (inspired by high speed rail naming) could become a British classic in terms of dry humour.

A high yesterday of 36 °C🔥

This has to be one of the most oppressive heatwaves for some time, and I'll be glad to see the back of it, to be honest.

The heat of 22 and 25 was drier with low humidity and very low dew points, making it more bearable both by day and by night.

This oppressive heat will prepare me for my trip to China in July, where it will be very humid/hot and wet/thundery.🌩️

On that basis, I would be probably be a good idea to start a new thread for the next heatwave.

With the way that this is going, it's probably not going to be long now before we're constant stuck in heatwave conditions in every summer with cooler and fresher conditions in summer becoming something which just never happens anymore, let alone any actual wet and unsettled summer weather.
