However, the temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is still stuck at around 25°C and that is important because the temperature records which I always quote on here are for the botanic gardens which is therefore, where that record needs to be broken if the web pages containing those records are to be updated to include today's value.

BTW the Harmonie model, which seems to be not too far off with a max of 34 later in London today, goes for 37C tomorrow in London and 39C in the West Midlands on Thursday.

Regardless of whether that happens or not though, I can confirm that the date record which was previously set at 26.1°C has now already gone.

That's the dangerous part that many people don't appreciate. I can feel it now with my body, as it's difficult to cool off even with the wet cloth trick. I hate to think what it will be like tomorrow with the forecast for higher humidity. It's 33.5 °C or so says the north-facing wall thermometer. It feels it.

And an 18.5 dewpoint too - for a day at least you're experiencing a typical late July / early August Kentish day. I bet it feels stifling!

The dewpoint map on Weatherobs (which shows official stations, even the ones that don't appear elsewhere) shows great swathes of 20C+ dewpoints across England and Wales, with slightly lower values for most of London and the M4 corridor. It's a very sultry day, and high dewpoints in the afternoon mean an uncomfortable night ahead...
