Sure the climate on a whole is warming, but i think urbanisation, and the expansion of tarmac & concrete, whilst simultaneously reduction in greenery are huge factors at play.

I reckon had the current set up and heat happened in the 60-70's then we would probably have struggled with to get much more than mid 30's in prone areas.

Met Office going 37/40/40 here for Tue to Thur but iPhone still on 35/36/34 and BBC 35/36/36. There has been much more disparity this year than before the 2022 heatwave. I’m guessing the will meet in the middle in the 38-39 range.

Surely an error but the 18Z ARPEGE zoom chart on Meteociel has the top temperature of 43C on Wednesday on the Welsh coast near Llanarth. (Go to 72 hour max temp)

I would expect to see widespread 35s and 36s on Tuesday to Thursday, and suspect the peak will be 38s or 39s, as per UKV. Reading University has a weather station, which is handy, and it's part of the climate network so would appear on the daily "hottest places" lists.

I'll be enjoying the relatively not-hot conditions today, peaking in the mid 20s here with a breeze off the sea, then it's a case of keeping the house as cool as I can and watching the reports come in over the next three days.

PS, Matty, I'm surprised you mention a/c as you've said in the past you love heat and humidity! I thought you might "raw dog" this heatwave to fully enjoy the experience. 😁

(One thing I've noticed, as an aside, are that in general the "you don't need a/c in the UK" comments you used to see online have largely vanished since 2022. It seems that record-breaking spell has led to societal change, and it's no surprise to see outdoor condenser units gradually popping up on houses in my area).

FWIW you can see soundings from Camborne and Herstmonceux here:

https://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding_legacy.html

You just need to pop in the station IDs, 03882 for Herstmonceux and 03808 for Camborne. The latter has a thickness of 571dam as of midnight last night, which is already pretty high!

From this morning's MetO - the 22C 850 isotherm is a few miles away from Aberdeen on Thursday evening, which must be exceptionally rare.

03Z UKV has widespread 40-41 and a few 42s on Thursday. Brian may be able to confirm whether there are any 43s lurking in the full data set? There is a 38 as far north as Carlisle with 35-36 on the Scottish border and 40-41 into Wales. So potentially two national records there.

We seem to be seeing a shift of Tuesday being a degree or two cooler and Thursday being the peak. 40 is looking within reach now.

Arpege continues to be bonkers with its minima. I reckon it's overestimating the heat-retaining potential of the airmass over the UK, perhaps due to the humid nature of it, but even so the charts are remarkable. Here's the 12 hour minimum chart for 7 AM on Thursday morning - note the little bit of 30 over Cornwall!

Date record for today is 34.3 set back in 1941. “Meltdown Monday” has been moderated significantly but there is still a small chance of beating that somewhere in the west.

Tuesday to Thursday date records (32.2, 32.6, 33.5) are all sure to go, I would have thought.

BTW the lowest official minimum yesterday morning was 1.8C at Braemar (so no official air frosts) - exactly 30C below the daily max at Heathrow.
