Just wait till your daughter reaches 60, as mine has. Then (and I hope you're still in good health to celebrate) you'll really wonder where the time went😊😊

I've just returned from skiing in Courcheval. The snow conditions were pretty good, but by no means classic. It snowed on the first three nights we were there, approx 8cm, 6cm, 2cm at resort level, more higher up of course. Also, it was cold, with the freezing level below 1650m at all times, apart from yesterday when it turned a lot milder.

I've put a few pics in the gallery.

If the models did not exist we would be seeing similar to Lapland by now like -9C at 10am here in the morning, some snow flurries after the heavy snow in the last few days.  London would be -6C and in Kent where Retron is at -10 to -11C after our over night lows sub -15C in the midlands, -10c in London and -15C inland Kent to -12C over the coastal areas.

Thanks models for ruining our winter and will not forgive you at all.

If this winter finishes above the CET*, surely it is going to rank as one of the biggest “disasters” of all time? Given the early disruption to the vortex, the background signals and the continental cold block that built, I wonder whether anyone (not data driven) will ever forecast a cold winter in the UK again. All eyes on February!

*I know it has been a different story in parts (only parts) of the north, with heavy snow being recorded.

Sooner than later this horrible non-weather pattern to break up at some point in Feb.

Kent is now in a moderate easterly airflow as shallow low move onto the Low Countries, but it's 8 C with rain easing off. Story of this winter with "fake" easterlies.

My conservatory did not exceed 20.0c in Jan only 19.9C the highest when we had one day sunshine last week, last year Jan was 23.3C and couple of 20C days due to zonality pattern after the early cold start.

Spotted a bunch of plum trees in blossom along side rows of daffodils in full flower. Winter truly is done with us along the balmy Solent coast

I guess it's been a pattern since before I was born, the big-hitting winters gradually getting less and less...

The thing for me though is the way that an inch of snow used to be unremarkable, heck even a centimetre wouldn't have caused any fuss back in the 80s and 90s (and I daresay before that too). These days it's like gold dust - 5 years now since the last snow day here (i.e. a covering, or even stretching it to a dusting, of snow at 9 AM) and the way the models are going it'll be 6 years soon enough. If we don't get snow on the ground this year that'll be unprecedented - there's never been such a long gap in my 46-year lifetime.

Sadly as a heat-hater I've got the worst of both worlds here. We've not only lost our once common snowy easterlies, but you can guarantee every summer will be a scorcher (even if people whinge that it's not 30C every day, they're always above average these days, and you can guarantee hitting 30 or more each year too.)

Yes Darren we still went to school every time we had snow cover over 10cm only twice closed in 1985 due to heavy snowfall and got stuck in Epsom area on way to school have to turn around to go back.  My teacher told us how her windows was cover in ice inside as we used to have metal or Aluminium frames in my dad home before which iced over when temps dropped below -10C.   1985 was the best winter as it snowing heavily on 16th Jan which was my birthday as my mom was walking home with a football cake from a local bakery shop which was still open.  20cm depth followed by 30cm depth on 10th Feb which was my brother birthday even his classmate with his parents came to visit for his birthday without problems driving from Dorking which had deeper snow due to boxhill surrounding.

Now feel very angry with the models as they ruined and prevented a very good chance of 80s winter set up since all other places had deep cold and snowy winter.  We had waited so long for Europe to be so cold enough for us to tap but alas models refused it.  Can’t see next winter a same repeat of deep cold in Europe for us to try again to tap it and with models still exist to do it best to block it.  Nick Sussex also said the models are like s[censored]ing at us from his post yesterday.

I'll be honest, winter lovers have my sympathy here. The current pattern (-NAO, southerly tracking jet and easterly winds) would be perfect for cold and snow, but without any real cold to tap into, it's useless. You'd be forgiven for thinking the current setup was courtesy of a gloomy, Atlantic westerly, though just a few degrees colder.
