Light overcast with a keen ESE breeze. Temperatures fairly mild at 7.8c overnight high 8.4c. That’s the wind picking up more of a sea fetch from the channel.

Skies are a total contrast to the last couple of days, which were totally cloudy free.

Today is overcast.

As long as it's cold, though, both have their charms!

On a more serious note though, today is only day two of the Borders’ permacast hell and today has at least not been as damp as yesterday.

Currently around 3°C here in Hawick.

Overcast but dry with light air. 7.5 C & 80% H still feel quite cold and clammy.

That said, conditions in the last few minutes of 2025 are looking favourable for another drone mission to mind.

PS: Not sure why my query regarding WeatherOnline issues in model output thread was deleted yesterday as it WAS model output-related, but just letting you know that after three days the web site is now fully functioning with all models accessible again.

It's the second batch of "lake effect" rain showers so far this winter - 850s are around -7 but it's just not cold enough for anything interesting. 5.0, dew 3.3.

(It's why I look for -10 or, better yet, -12 for snow from the NE).

Meanwhile, I am now back in Edinburgh after yet another completely snowless Christmas trip to the Scottish Borders with very little in the way of frost.

I actually came back yesterday. That was a day which started cloudy down in Hawick, but with that cloud gradually breaking up. On my journey north, I then ran into cloud, mist, fog and even some drizzly rain in places along the way. As I am travelling along the A7 from the Borders into the Midlothian Council area, I can usually start to see Edinburgh in the distance with the characteristic sight of Arthur's Seat already starting to come into view with the Pentland Hills also appearing further west but with all of the mist and fog around, there was never any chance of me being able to see that on this occasion. When I then arrived in Edinburgh, the drizzle had gone but I had entered into the ongoing permacast hell which Jerry has mentioned in recent days, and this meant that it was already getting dark when I arrived shortly after 3pm.

Today is a completely different story though so in that regard, Jerry will no doubt be glad that I did come back as that seems to brought back our sunshine. Last night was a fairly cold night with an official air frost after the skies cleared during the night with the temperature dropping to a minimum of -2.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That actually makes last night our coldest night of this winter so far but today is now the penultimate day of both this month and this year, and for that to be our lowest temperature of any winter month is pretty pathetic in my books.😡

In complete contrast to other recent days though, today up until now has been bright and sunny with only small amounts of cloud and a temperature of around 3°C here in Edinburgh.

Today's maximum temperature at  Edinburgh was 3.4°C which makes today our coldest day of the winter so far. Since there is only one day left of this month and year after today though, it is rather pathetic for that given value to be the lowest temperature of any winter month.😡

That comes with an impressive (for this time of year) 4.6 hours of sunshine being recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank but even with that, this month will now go down as being duller than average overall regardless of what happens tomorrow as there isn't enough available daylight to be able to give us a sunnier than average month on this occasion.

With those clear skies though, the temperatures have dropped away quite nice with an official air frost already being recorded at all three of my local stations. Regardless of what happens during the rest of the night, tonight will already be going down as our coldest night of the winter so far with a temperature of around -4°C here in Edinburgh as I write.

It was a sparkling morning earlier here too - the near-full moon shining serenely and the ground aglitter with a hoar frost. I'm still to see the first air frost of winter, though, as it only reached 0.0 before cloud moved in and, as a result, temperatures have risen to 1.7 (dew 0.6).

Yesterday's high was 6.3, meaning the coldest day of the winter so far remains Christmas Day (with a 5.9 maximum). That should be handily beaten over the weekend...

Last night was our coldest night of the winter so far as the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank dropped to -4.9°C which would no doubt have made it feel very cold for those football fans who were going to last night's match at Easter Road.

As a result, there is quite a lot of frost around but although the skies are still clear as I write (which should give rise to a bright and sunny start to the day later on), the temperatures has now jumped up to around +1°C with a rise of nearly 5°C in just over a couple of hours as a result of less cold air now starting to come in ahead of tonight's weather front.😡
