BBC updated @ 3am.  And 4pm.

"Three people have already died in Jamaica as it braces for the world's strongest storm this year - and possibly the strongest on record for the island - with US meteorologists warning of "catastrophic and life-threatening" conditions.

With wind speeds of up to 175mph (282km/h), Hurricane Melissa is a category five storm - the maximum strength. It is intensifying and expected to make landfall on the Caribbean island early on Tuesday."

And unusually late in the season too. Just when they thought they were getting off lightly after most of the hurricanes beforehand had stayed out at sea, although the Gulf of Mexico/America has remain untouched so far.

Thoughts to the people of Jamaica and hope the death toll end up being minimum.

It looks very bad. It puts it into perspective when we moan about it being "a bit windy" for a few days. I hope the damage doesn't end up being as bad as expected, but it doesn't look good already. Isn't it the strongest recorded hurricane to ever hit Jamaica?

252mph winds measured by the Hurricane Hunter plane - the strongest winds ever recorded in an Atlantic Hurricane.  Absolutely insane.

Seems almost wrong to mention it given the appalling devastion affecting Jamaica, but it wouldn't need an enormous change in track for us to feel the after effects of this system.

Interesting New Scientist piece relating to this.

"The monster hurricane pummelling Jamaica is powered by abnormal sea surface temperatures in the Caribbean, which were made at least 500 times more likely by global warming..."

“There has been a perfect storm of conditions leading to the colossal strength of Hurricane Melissa: a warm ocean which has fuelled its rapid intensification over the last few days, but it is also moving slowly, meaning more rain can fall whilst it moves across land,” Leanne Archer at the University of Bristol, UK, said in a statement. “Most of these conditions have been supercharged by the extra heat in our oceans and atmosphere due to climate change.”

Both Jamaica and Cuba have hurricane defence policies and have put funding into providing shelters and strengthening infrastructure, so the loss of life is less than would be the case if, say, Melissa had hit Haiti. But nevertheless, the damage looks fearsome and will impoverish the islands for some time to come. Tourism is a money-spinner for Jamaica, but even once everything has been tidied up, people will still remember Melissa and not take the risk.

Now the interesting point for Britain is where Melissa will arrive. The models offer three possibilities for Monday:

1) merging with the N Atlantic circulation near Greenland (GFS, ECM).

2) maintaining its identity as a tropical storm aimed at Scotland (NHC)

3) becoming a moderately deep but conventional depression, post-tropical with fronts, and aimed at Ireland (FAX)

I’m hoping that’s it now for hurricanes.  We’re off on another cruise next week, taking us from Cape Verde across the Atlantic to St Lucia.
