It's a double-edged sword, really. Would you rather have say 27C and a dewpoint of 20C, which feels stifling and which won't cool down very quickly at night (as we'll have here), or say 32C and a dewpoint of 3C, as the GFS shows for parts of the Midlands today? The latter will feel more pleasant all round, but will dry things out that much more...

Incidentally both the GFS and MetO show 850s of 22C or more over Cornwall this weekend. That's very unusual this late in the year, but the fact Cornwall is a peninsula should temper the heat a bit. Just as well it's over there, as those sort of 850s would support 35 or 36 over here!

Was so furious to see dampness and overcast skies this morning so like you said can’t see temps reaching near mid 30s here as previous heatwaves  that brought those temps was super clear skies breezy dry air and real heat last seen here Sept 2023 and last month short 2 days spell.   

I wonder why all forecasts and models had been very wrong this time as we under HP meant to be hot dry and sunny set up not unsettled weather. I feel envy that Europe see their heatwave done well and high temps achieved without any hindrance.

Let see if this weekend one deliver higher temps sunny and properly run heatwave.  Forget about today or tomorrow. 

Darren is being realistic. If this weather continues as modeled the the water situation can only deteriorate, quite seriously IMO.

We 'might' reach heatwave threshold here today (25 C) I doubt it would last 3 days but at last it's turning warm and sunny 😁

Oh dear they not back down those high temps with no sun and recent rain will put a lid on high temps.  More like mid 20s without sun.

For your location I would be very surprised if it did not reach 30°C (at least) today.

It should reach the mid 20s again here today which would be very nice.

Still very dull and cloudy and much cooler so now have to wait for next batch to deliver much hotter and sunnier weather this weekend as this one failed and once it failed no recovery can work. 

It was a great summer, though I cant believe it had so many plus 30 days. 

It may have failed to deliver where you are, but fortunately for the rest of us it's still not yet 10am so we won't know for a least another 8 hours 😉

It was a good one that's for sure. Lots of fires where I lived in Sussex, probably the driest landscape of my lifetime.  Should be remembered more than it is really 76 gets all the glory.

Quite the opposite here in normally soggy South Wales Saint - it's bone dry with a dessicating stiff easterly breeze. 

Stepping outside already feels like being in a hair dryer.

This shows the 27 days of 30C+ I mentioned and referenced earlier in the thread and the following 7 to get to 34 over 30C

There would have to have been a lot of later amendments to the diary to get to 34 IMO

It is interesting that the 30C records were less SE centric than in this years heat

10am and it was 26.2c

Would be interesting to know where the BBC got the 34 days from. There is obviously some merit to the stat. Not sure how we find out?

Looking at that list of 30C plus days reminds me of a couple of weather stations that don't seem to get mentioned any more. When I were a lad, I'd love reading the list of max temperatures around the country in the national paper (my Dad used to buy the Daily Telegraph). In widespread heatwaves you'd often see Saunton Sands at or near the top of the list. And then there's Barbourne which features strongly in the 1995 list. I'm guessing both of these have been decommissioned?

24.0°C here just now. It could be two consecutive days above 25°C, and if that was the case tomorrow too it would reach the heatwave threshold. It’s still a tough challenge, but it is possible.
