About 12mm 🌧️ so far this weekend. Mostly steady and unassuming. No thundery activity at all. Quite different to what I expected a few days ago.

As I write, there are some lightning strikes currently showing up in the North Sea just off the Aberdeenshire coast but that’s all I can see as far as the whole of the UK is concerned.

As far as official yellow warnings for thunderstorms are concerned though, there are three separate warnings in force for today. One warning covers Wales and SW England with another one covering the west of Northern Ireland. In addition to that, there is also a third warning covering the south and west of Scotland which both Edinburgh and the Borders are under.

As far as tomorrow is concerned, there is another warning in force which covers roughly the same parts of Scotland along with NE Wales and most of England.

As a result, this thread is now probably likely to extend into tomorrow’s events and not just cover this weekend’s events as the title of this thread would suggest.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Weak thunderstorms and one lightning here earlier on, i am sure it would be stronger if we had many hours of sunshine to generate 90's storms type.

A couple more showers today has pushed the total up to 15mm for this thundery spell with perhaps some more overnight. It might not sound much to many but it is the most here in 24 hours for several weeks. It is most welcome because it has had a chance to soak in without a heatwave the next day to evaporate it all so whilst not really deep enough into the ground it has helped smaller plants.

Up to 15mm now weekend total but I see that I am missing another big S-N streamer of heavy rain by about being 5 miles West. Looks right on line for Sheppey so see what Retron got in the morning. There is a lot coming up from France throughout the night and into the morning by the looks of it so still hopes of doubling that figure which would do wonders for the garden and allotment.

When you see these popping up and 15 minutes later a downpour breaks out a few miles to the north..

The rain in the middle of the night you mentioned was insignificant here, the other end of Sheppey got a mm or two but nothing registered here. OTOH there has been some decent rain this morning, with a peak rate of 31mm/hour at 5:20 AM - it was loud!

There's been 12.8mm here today, 16.6mm in the last 24 hours. And the monthly total is now 52.6mm, which means it's now a wet month! Will wonders never cease...

In that downpour at 6.00 am I got another 9.3mm in a standard funnel rain gauge which I also used as calibrating my AWS which was pretty close at 9.0mm considering some must have bounced out and it only does 0.3mm tips. Most of that rain still went East of me up into Suffolk so I suppose I was lucky  to get that as London missed it to my West. So 24mm from this spell now which is pretty good considering how much by passed me. 33.6mm for the month making it a wet month by recent standards!

These showers forming are hardly moving at all, could be some enormous totals in places.  Dry here but heavy showers in most directions, but hard to work out if anything is moving .

The thundery stuff has got going according to the radar in a significant part of England. Slow moving too.

The weather warning for me slipped away a few hours ago with nothing to show for it.

A good 20 minutes here of frequent rumbles from a cell slowly moving to the east of me. The odd louder crack of thunder too. Other cells seem to be developing too around me.

For those looking at the deep purple over Canterbury on the radar (three adjacent pixels of >250mm/hour rainfall rate on the next-to-latest image) - they've had over an inch in the last hour, 28-38mm, and over the past 3 hours there's been 60-76mm of rain! The 91-20 July average for Brogdale, the nearest official station, is only 43mm.

Funnily enough the usual "it's called summer" type commenters on the local rag's website (when a warning was issued) haven't popped up on the inevitable follow-up article about localised flooding!
