We seem to be a some kind of pattern change, if that's the correct term. The forecast heavy rain for later today is gone from the latest BBC update. It was there earlier this morning. The precipitation that shows on the current radar is nothing more than nuisance rain on the ground.

I have no idea if this trend will continue but based on how these changes occur with weakening fronts as one sign, I think it likely that a dry spell (a long one?) beckons. Warmer/calmer/sunnier would be great even if we are already enjoying above average temp wise. It doesn't really feel it though with this cloud cover.

Usually, Edinburgh will be the first place to dry out with that process already being underway whilst the rest of the UK is still very wet. That doesn't appear to be the case this time though and instead, it would appear that we were just the final part of the UK in this instance to end up getting into that really wet pattern (as shown by the fact that our first wetter than average month of this year didn't actually happen until March).

However, it may well be that perhaps with the exception of the west of Scotland (which has actually been drier than average throughout most of this period), we might well all be coming into that change of pattern together.

Even with Storm Pierrick, there was no more than 1 mm of rain from that after 09:00 UTC yesterday morning even though the weather still took a while to clear up after that and although this morning's rainfall has now "technically" arrived, it really isn't amounting to anything at all, and has only just made things a little bit damp and no more. Adding those two things today, this might suggest that we're now drying out here overall which usually always happens anyway as Edinburgh never gets long sequences of consecutive wetter than average months.

A fairly bright start to today here in Edinburgh with some decent sunshine but it is also fairly windy, though nothing like as windy as it was last weekend with Storm Kathleen.

Last night was very mild and although the official minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is shown to be 8.0°C, that was actually recorded yesterday morning just after the start of the official observation day for yesterday at 10am BST (09:00 UTC).

During last night itself, the temperatures were actually quite a bit higher than that with yesterday's official maximum temperature of 13.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank being recorded during yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 7:40am BST (06:40 UTC) this morning was 11.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Despite a stiff wind blowing through the Central Belt, we have enjoyed plenty of hazy sun with patchy lower cloud. My two digital thermometers are reading 15.7 and 15.9 C. This may turn out to be my second warmest day of the year.

Meanwhile, today's hotspot here in Edinburgh as I write is the botanic gardens with a temperature of 16.6°C whereas Musselburgh in East Lothian just to the east of Edinburgh is the overall local hotspot with a temperature of 16.7°C.

The only downside is that there's now a lot more in the way of cloud around which means that it's not as sunny as it was this morning. That could now put a cap on the temperatures and prevent them from rising any further.

The temperatures here in Edinburgh have dropped back slightly but the Sun is back out again and Musselburgh appears to have now just had its warmest day of this year so far with a temperature of 18.3°C as I write.

I appreciate this is a very unscientific check but nonetheless it cannot be very often that Lands End Airport has the joint lowest temperature on xcweather.co.uk. However it does this afternoon at 11c.

I can now confirm that Edinburgh has just had its warmest day of this year so far with a temperature of 17.4°C as at 3:10 pm BST (14:10 UTC) this afternoon.

Since that was recorded from an additional 10 minute reading, it won't show on the major sites such as weatherobs.com which only show the hourly data but that is the highest temperature of the day so far and the actual maximum temperature will therefore be the same as or higher than that.

As at 3:20 pm BST (14:20 UTC) this afternoon, the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank had dropped back just slightly to 17.1°C.

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was confirmed as 17.6°C and isn't dropping all that much tonight either as the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was still around 12°C as at 9:20pm BST (20:20 UTC) this evening.

Although we briefly had some late evening sunshine though, the weather has once again gone downhill over time and it's now raining yet again as I write.

9C. Mainly cloudy with brightish peeks from time to time with medium to high cloud.

Yesterdays high for the first time this year of 18C, was a brief flash in the pan. It soon returned to 16C.

Overnight rain has cleared away but there is still a lot of cloud around although there are also a few breaks in that cloud with the odd sunny interval coming through at times.

Last night was very mild and was by far, our warmest night of this year so far with an official minimum temperature of 11.5°C.

It was also only our first double figures minimum temperature of this year.

Since there are still a few hours to go until the official end of that observation day at 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning, the final figure for yesterday's official minimum temperature could still end up being lower than what I have quoted above but it would take quite a big drop in the temperature over that period to scupper those hopes of last night being our warmest night of the year so far, or even those hopes of our first double figures minimum being recorded and that is unlikely to happen.

Meanwhile, the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7:10 am BST (06:10 UTC) this morning was 12.4°C.

The first 21 of the year here - sunny, breezy, feels like a summer's day.

Currently 21.2, dew 14.8, which is the high so far. Last night just got into single figures, briefly, with a low of 9.7.

A similar day to yesterday here in Edinburgh.

It's fairly windy but not excessively so (by that, I mean that there's not been any wind gusts of 30 mph or higher at Edinburgh Gogarbank so far) and although there's still a lot of cloud around, there's also been some blue sky around and occasional sunny intervals.

Temperatures are similar to what we had yesterday, so the temperature at 1:30pm BST (12:30 UTC) this afternoon was around 16°C here in Edinburgh.

It really does seem as though we're heading into a completely different pattern as well because it's been a lot warmer than of late in the last couple of days, there's even been a bit more sunshine than we've been used to (although that wouldn't exactly be difficult) and there's not been anything like as much rain around either, even though we've still had some rain over the last couple of nights in particular.

That makes a complete change from the almost constant dull, cold and wet conditions which we were having to endure beforehand.

Looks like I spoke too soon a wee while ago as the rain has now returned as I write.

The temperature has also dropped slightly to around 14°C as well as at 3:30pm BST (14:30 UTC) this afternoon which means that today is not quite going to end up being as warm as yesterday.
