Was really showers with azure blue skies and avril clouds top appearance? or all day cloudy with rain on and off? if so that classed as outbreak of rain. Showers should accompany with lot of sunshine in between which nice set up but sadly no more like in the past we normally see in Spring.

'Spring' has started well here in E-Sussex - Dry, cool and for the past few days fairly sunny.

The winter wasn't/hasn't been a particularly bad one here in the SE; We've had snow, we've had ice days, we've had fairly regular frosts and its been unbelievably dry since January! (14% of our LTA rainfall in Feb according to EA figures).

A bit more sun would have been nice but as long as its not icy rain and wind then you won't hear me complaining.

When it does emerge the sun feels much warmer and this is stirring the garden into life. I'm hoping that this current/incoming cold spell is brief and tame given the damage frost and snow can cause so late in the season. 

Fingers crossed this thread stays quiet as a result of a good Spring for all!

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0001 on Monday 06 Mar and 2359 on Thursday 09 Mar in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

There is an increased confidence that a period of very cold weather will develop across the country from early next week, as a north or northeasterly airflow becomes established across the UK. The highest confidence is for northern parts where cold weather is expected to develop from early on Monday, progressing southwards through the day. Below average temperatures are expected throughout, bringing a widespread frost and wintry showers, these frequent along exposed windward coasts along with a risk of ice hazards. There is also a risk of more prolonged snow, perhaps due to rain pushing into the west from around midweek, although this is currently considered to be low confidence. This alert is likely to be updated and perhaps extended next week.

Just so long as our Friends in the North can distinguish West and East Sussex, and realise that 'the SE' is not a monolithic bloc!

In West Sussex (and Hampshire) I think we've had more sunshine, the latest example being this morning with clear skies here in the West and cloud in the East; but no ice days and as for snow, not a single flake 😒

Snow and Ice warning issue for Monday and Tuesday for parts of Scotland and northern England

Snow showers are likely to cause some disruption to travel with a small chance of more widespread disruption for some.

What to expect

• There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
• There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
• A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
• There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected

A band of rain, sleet and snow is expected to move south during Monday followed by frequent snow and hail showers. Whilst the highest accumulations of 5-10 cm are most likely over northern Scotland, there is a small chance of more organised and persistent spells of snow developing elsewhere in this area, and could bring 2 to 5 cm even at lower levels. Into Monday night, showers are expected to continue, and ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces where snow has melted by day.

The most dismal second half of winter I have ever had to suffer has now been followed by the most dire and depressing start to spring in my lifetime.

Things have sunk so low that the past week makes the unspeakably horrific and wortheless dross of the past 2 months, which was so bad as to make me nostalgic for even the worst of winters in the past decade, seem palatable by comparison.

Less than 2 hours sun since Monday just endless featureless soul destroying grey filth with tedious 6-7C maxes, wind and rain even with pressure of 1040mb 🤮Nowhere near a frost at night. To call this weather would be taking liberties with the English language.

Over five weeks without an air frost now. I would say this has been the worst start to a year imagineable but you'd have to have some hell of a warped imagination to even believe the what we've just gone through would even be possible. 5 weeks frost-free should not be happening untl June  🤬

With not so much as a flake of snow or a frost, February was easily the worst winter month I have had to endure. It therefore seems incredulous that we are about to get a memorable week of snow coming up. Feels as though it will be a disastrous flop like the Beast From the East. Pretty much everything is these days 🙄

General Situation: Very cold weather is expected across most of England this week, with widespread frosts overnight and temperatures struggling to rise above freezing in some places during the day. A band of rain and hill snow will move southwards during Monday, perhaps bringing some snow to low levels for a time overnight into Tuesday for central, eastern and south-eastern England. To the north of this band frequent snow showers will affect northeast England during Monday and Tuesday, with icy stretches developing. Another spell of rain, sleet and snow is likely for southern parts of England during Wednesday, then central and northern England are at risk of seeing periods of snow on Thursday and Friday.

5 weeks without a frost in Aberdeen in winter should be as unlikely as sunbathing on the Greenland ice shelf, truly appalling.

All the nonsense of snow and arctic  blast is failing here all I see is very severe cloud feat with few minutes of sun 2 days ago this month.   Still cloud fest and less cold temps as a result this morning.  Normally past arctic blasts bring lot of sunshine and snow showers like in 2021.  Saw 15C up from 12C on Monday so cant wait to see warm spring sunshine.

I think it's fair to say that this so called "cold spell" is only really affecting northern areas - here in Devon we have yet to reach freezing and now as I type at 1900 (7pm) it's still 4.5c and with rain on the way temperatures will only rise ahead. So tomorrow is looking more like a cold rain scenario for many parts or at best a slushfest for the moors and or temporary covering - the cold air never really reached cornwall anyway. Bit of a waste me thinks but it is March after all.

The solar input is rapidly increasing; the Sun is nearly three times as high as it was on the winter solstice and daylight is over 11 hours now, so it will lift the temperatures regardless of the air mass. To see 0/1°C days now, you need brutal cold like early March 2018, not "bog-standard" cold.

It's also why I 'd rather use the meteorological seasons to the astronomical ones. Cold weather now has a completely different feel to cold weather in early December. At this time of year, you can feel the strength of the Sun, whereas in December you very rarely can.

As a dedicated winter shorts wearer I can agree. On my walk back from work this afternoon it felt good to feel the warmth of the sun on my bare legs, yet up top I was overheating in the sun wearing my black winter coat.

Really looking forward to the rain and occasional blob of sleet here in the coastal part of snow free West Sussex😂😂. Still it is all about expectations….I wasn’t really expecting to see settling snow here...but 10 mins of falling snow is not too much to ask, surely? Last saw a falling snow flake here in Chichester in November 2021😲😲

I know that it doesn't feel like spring just now, but this is the moaning thread which we are now being asked to post to as Dew has mentioned in the old winter moaning thread.

Apart from the fact that I would much rather be getting on with spring just now rather than being stuck in winter, especially with February having been such a poor month for winter weather, I don't have an awful lot to moan about just now.

My main reason for posting this is therefore, to bring it closer to the top of the list where it will be easier to spot.
