Southern parts of Australia have cold summers compared to their equivalent latitudes in the northern hemisphere - Hobart has cooler summers than London and only slightly warmer than here  despite being 10 degrees closer to the equator.

The joys of a continental climate. Could be a all time classic and for there that's saying something. They have already had a mega fall in the great lake area this month.

North West Canada is also even colder than usual at the moment. Nunavat usually gets the most extreme winter cold but at the moment it is being experienced in parts of the Yukon and North-West Territories

Currently -50.6C at Fort Selkirk, YT and -51.7C at Rabbit Kettle, NT (where I don't think much would be boiling right now, certainly not a rabbit).

Melbourne Tullamarine airport had a couple of very localised lively storms yesterday.

Looking at the data on the BOM website, they had 60mm yesterday, compared to 1.6mm in the city.

43mm fell in less than half an hour.

I've said it before but in recent years the USA seems to have had lots of extreme cold outbreaks and I think that's part of the reason you see so much AGW scepticism on the internet (which is of course very US-dominated).

The BBC had an interview with a weather presenter from a Chicago radio station this morning, and he was saying that the cold weather there is forecast to disappear as quickly as it came, with temps back to a balmy (for Chicago) 9C by the New Year. But the charts suggest that the cold and especially the snow will hang on longer in New England.

FWIW, I acquired a reputation for forecasting snow in the Kentish village where we lived in the 80s, based on snow arriving three weeks after New York had a big fall. Then in the 90s, that forecast method just stopped working, and I quietly tried to forget about it. There's little sign of it being successful this year either so presumably I struck lucky for those few years.

I do remember as a youngster back in the 70s and 80s this was often stated and it did turn out to be the case on occasions - both hot spells and cold spells. I'm sure weather patterns have changed since then because this very rarely seems to happen any more along with steady west-east moving anticyclones giving 3 fine days followed by a cold front and rain.

And here is the weather warning. I think they might be enjoying a snowy Christmas 😉 ....

Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of
2 to 3 feet with locally higher amounts possible. Winds gusting
as high as 65 to 70 mph today and tonight. A rapid switch from
rain to snow with sharply falling temperatures into the teens
and single digits will result in a flash freeze today. Blizzard
conditions will develop this afternoon lasting into Saturday
night. Wind chills as cold as 10 to 20 below zero.
