Just recently, I haven't really been in the mood for starting these threads but although last month was also drier than average yet again, it wasn't actually as dry as other recent months and the latest model output suggests that this month could actually end up being quite wet.

It may well dry up a bit once again as we get to the middle part of the month but I was watching Brian's latest video on the official TWO YouTube channel and the 10 day prediction chart from the ECMF model which I saw on that video suggests that we could well have already had more than our 1991-2020 September average rainfall by then with more than 100 mm in a few places.

The similar chart from the GFS model shows it to be not as wet as that, but this could all make for a more interesting month than what I have been witnessing for quite a while.

After a couple of summer-like days to start this month off, we are now going into a much more unsettled spell of weather, so I will expect this thread to become rather busy in the coming days.

In the meantime, I will kick things off by reporting that even after a damp start to this morning, this month's totals as at 7am BST (06:00 UTC) this morning stood at 0.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank, whilst continuing to be stuck at 0.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where there has now been no recorded rainfall whatsoever for the last 7 days.

Things are up and running for the month here with a mighty 1mm overnight.

It'll be an interesting month. The charts look unsettled but I'm less sure actual amounts will be that much.

Meanwhile and in complete contrast to what's happening up there, the rain just keeps on refusing to fall here in Edinburgh as the latest overnight band of rain which has now just about cleared away from here, produced the grand total of just 1.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This is showing yet again how Edinburgh is fast developing a desert-like climate these days, and the fact that regardless of the model output and the synoptic setup, it just increasingly never rains here anymore (even Steve with the user name of Gusty on this forum, pointed that out really well just a couple of month's ago when he started July's precipitation thread on my behalf).

It is for that reason, that we never get anything else other than drier than average months here anymore, sometimes even substantially so and despite what the forecasts and the model output is showing, I can see absolutely nothing there which will convince me in any way that this situation is going to change here any time soon.

To be honest, I am just sick and tired of always seeing that same old outcome in that regard, and that is why I have lost so much interest in these threads just lately.

So, expect yet another drier than average month here once again whilst everywhere else gets a good soaking and some much needed rainfall from the latest so-called "unsettled" weather.

You did though have plenty of rain in August 

6.5mm so far. Was quite a burst of rain last night which accounts for most of that.

I've got it on 8mm so far down in Tinshill Tim. 5.5mm last night, 1.5mm Sat - Sun, and 1mm Fri - Sat. 

A whole 0.2mm here around dawn

 

You did though have plenty of rain in August 

That is only a relative thing and you are correct in saying we did get quite a bit of rain here during August in comparison with what just about everyone else was reporting on here then.

However, August 2022 was a very exceptional month in which hardly anyone actually recorded very much in the way of rainfall and so, it was never going to take much for the totals for here to be higher than what was reported for elsewhere as a result.

Furthermore and although the totals for here were quite high during August in comparison with what others were reporting, our totals for here were still below our 1991-2020 August average.

What I am complaining about here is therefore, not any claim that we never actually get any rain, but the fact that our totals are ALWAYS below average (what it all boils down to is the fact that I'm just sick and fed up with that same old outcome all the time).

Occasionally, we might well get an odd day here and there when I will maybe record something like 10mm to 20mm of rain on that particular day, and I would never dispute the fact that this never happens. The big issue that I am raising here though is that this firstly doesn't happen all that happen and even when it does, it just about always then ends up being virtually bone dry here for days on end after that.

As long as that continues to be the case, our totals are always going to be below average in the end and that is the source of my overall frustration in this matter because unless we start to get some monthly totals which are actually above average, we are never even going to be able to begin to make up the overall rainfall deficit and at the moment, I am struggling to see that changing any time soon.
