I saw on Twitter something implying Brogdale only managed 39.0C yesterday. Which seems strange given my PWS up in the downs got to 39.2C and generally doesn't over-report, and Brogdale is downslope in North Kent in a proper hotspot.

It is quite possible your area has experienced  the highest UK temp and the deepest lowland snow in the last 30 years....

Yes if we had a better more widespread weather station network I think we would have seen 41c/42c yesterday.

The Waddington reading was exactly the same as Coningsby so it doesn’t really make any difference.

So following on from this historic spell, here is the updated list of the top 10 hottest days ever in the UK. Shame we didn't take both top spots, but never mind!

1: 40.3C - 19 July 2022 - Coningsby

2: 38.7C - 25 July 2019 - Cambridge Botanic Garden

3: 38.5C - 10 August 2003 - Brogdale

4: 38.1C* - 18 July 2022 - Santon Downham

5: 37.8C - 31 July 2020 - Heathrow

6: 37.1C - 3 August 1990 - Cheltenham

7=: 36.7C - 1 July 2015 - Heathrow

7=: 36.7C - 9 August 1911 - Raunds

9: 36.6C - 2 August 1990 - Worcester

10: 36.5C - 19 July 2006 - Wisley

This has pushed two 36.4C days (7 August 2020 at Kew Gardens and 6 August 2003 at Gravesend) out of the top 10.

It also means 4 out of the top 5 hottest days ever have occurred within the last three years (from today, not calendar years), and 7 out of 10 within the last 20 years. I'm sure it won't be long before those stragglers from the 20th century get demoted too.

(* the actual figure was recorded as 38.15C in the raw data, so I am not sure why it was not rounded up!)

I've just watched Gavin P.'s latest 10-14 day forecast video where he mentioned that the provisional Scottish record from yesterday is now up to 35.1°C as recorded at Floors Castle in Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders.

That indeed has also been confirmed on Sean Beatty's Twitter feed which means that the particular station which I have just mentioned, has now taken over from Charterhall as the current provisional record holder although Floor's Castle is also not far from here in Hawick, and that was also deemed before the event itself, to be the favourite to take that title which the actual record is officially confirmed by the Met Office.

In a recent post when I was talking about 18:00 UTC SYNOP codes etc., I did predict that the actual record might end up being over 35°C, and that has now been shown to be correct.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Jesus, the amount of people on social media comparing Summer 1976 and this recent exceptional hot spell and treating it like there is some kind of hidden agenda just makes me despair for mankind. Both Summers will be remembered but for different reasons, nothing more nothing less.

Horses for courses and all that as attitudes changes as we go into the internet era and we look back at the past with rose tinted lens.

It is strange that today's maximum (so far) is much later than the last two days here. 26.9C at 16.40.
