I am not sure we will see such an event again for a long time. Not 40c across such a wide area. Everything needs to come together for it to happen, the country is so narrow and any influence from the North or Irish Seas and there is no chance.

I think the record may will be broken again soon but probably fairly localised in the SE.

It will never count for anything in the overall scheme of things, but a friend with a pretty reliable screened setup just south of York recorded 40.2c yesterday. Personally I got to 39.4c 10 miles north of York, not too far off Topcliffe's max which is a further 10 miles north from me.

I think even with AGW this was quite a statistical outlier. Many places will have added 4 or 5 degrees to their previous records. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if those values across the north of England are never matched in my lifetime.

But as Tim says I could easily see Heathrow or somewhere like that snatch a 41C during one of the quick wafts of heat from the south that are becoming increasingly common. Given the level of heat to the south in the longer range model output I wouldn’t even rule it out next month!

Last night at midnight the temp was 21.7C, 50 mins later it had risen to 25.1C, madness.

Not quite a tropical night in the end at 19.8C. Only 0.2mm of rain added to the month which now stands at 1.6mm.

So, half an hour till the Cambridge Botanic Garden thermometer gets read. I imagine they will tweet the result fairly quickly if it’s a new record.

FWIW in 2019 the NIAB reading was 38.1 and the BG was 38.7

on Monday the NIAB was 37.5 and the BG was 38.0

Yesterday the NIAB was 39.9.

Place your bets…

Surely the reporting software isn’t capped at 39.9C? If it’s true then someone has had, as we say down here, a right mare.

But they should have set the cap at a higher level than 40C.

I would assume that the destructive London fires yesterday that seemed to occur at around the same time were started deliberately.

Maybe somewhere else might squeeze 40.4c but unlikely.  So Coningsby is the new record holder.  Wonder for how long?

And for a station to record 39.9C and still lose the record, bet not many would guess that outcome

Strange that the Met Office is  not showing any of the 40+ observations on their "last 24 hours" page

They show Scampton at 39.9C

Anyone know why these higher readings have been ignored ?
