It does make me think that the less extreme the weather, the more the population are interested in it! Just imagine if all of the forum members were living in the eastern US! This forum would be brimming with excitement. Or would it, if they get regular snowstorms every year? But I realise that this is a bit of a beast even by their standards.

Over here we get excited at the prospect (or even the small possibility) of a couple of inches of snow in the winter, a few claps of thunder or temperatures above 25C in the summer!

This lightning is very unusable?  -

Edit - If it was usual that would be great!!

However it should have said - unusual!!

see -https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-60221521

Quote:

An almost 500-mile long bolt of lightning that lit up the sky across three US states has set a new world record for longest flash, scientists have confirmed. The lightning bolt, extended a total of 477.2 miles (768 km) and spread across Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The previous record was 440.6 miles (709 km) and recorded in Brazil in 2018. Lightning rarely extends over 10 miles and usually lasts under a second.Another lightning flash recorded in 2020 - in Uruguay and Argentina - has also set a new record for duration at 17.1 seconds. The previous record was 16.7 seconds."These are extraordinary records from lightning flash events," Professor Randall Cerveny, the WMO's rapporteur of weather and climate extremes, said.According to the WMO, both records took place in areas prone to intense storms that produce 'megaflashes', namely the Great Plains region of the United States and the La Plata basin of South America's southern cone.

At the moment, any weather here in Edinburgh which is even the least bit interesting will probably deserve a mention in this thread as that has become such a rare occurrence these days.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I've seen many brilliant red/orange/yellow skys at sunrise/sunset the last ten days than ever before over a similar period. Has anyone else noticed the wonderful recent displays?

Quote :   A massive winter snow storm has hit the state of Texas, bringing with it heavy snow and ice.

It's caused widespread travel chaos and left thousands without power.

The state's governor, Greg Abbot, said the state is facing one of the most significant icing events in decades.

Winter Olympics: Heavy snowfall in Beijing causes disruption to alpine & freestyle skiing

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-olympics/60365573

Apparently the man made 'snow' they were using earlier (because of the lack of real snow) is too slippery. Anyway they now seem to have plenty of real snow but it's still causing problems because it's hard to see where you are going. And it's dangerously cold too. The athletes or some of them are all over the place.

Highs of 78F or 26c reached in DC - the US CAPITOL today along with 72F or 22c in NYC.

Quite remarkable for warmth for early March up the eastern seaboard - I wonder if it broke records!?

Very cold air over Cyprus and colder than Jan and Feb with lot of reports of heavy snow in Nicosia and drop to 0.8C before 9am and some settled on some areas.   Last time it happened in March was 5C in 1987 but no snow that time.  Now 6C as forecast to reach 7C today.  What a very interesting weather event and more variety for them. 65cm at Troodos and 120cm at top.

Temps dropped to 2C  earlier on with snow showers so today was 0.5C to 6.8C in Nicosia.  Nicosia got more snow than here during 3 winter months. God forbid that UK dont have any other  weather apart from wind and rain with same static temps.
