Looks beautiful. Always nice to see snow in Cyprus and I can only find one webcam up in the Troodos mountains that gives a reasonable view.

Typically there is snow cover up on the ski slopes through Jan and Feb so this is a touch earlier than usual. Looks like it is already melting quite rapidly though ....

Our friends in Cyprus go snowboarding in Troodos but it is quite fickle for snow but given the warm Med and polar plunges across a long land track there are occasions when copious snow falls there

Reports coming in of an historic and catastrophic tornado in the state of Kentucky. It looks to be the longest lived tornado ever recorded with a time on the ground of over 3 and a 1/2 hours and a track length in excess of 280 miles.
Some early reports suggest the light debris field (paper, leaves etc) covers around half of the entire state of Kentucky.

Just read this -

Quote:

The governor of the US state of Kentucky has warned that more than 50 people are thought to have been killed by tornadoes overnight.

Andy Beshear said the figure could rise to as many as 100 in what he called the worst tornadoes in the state's history.

He said the number was "probably closer to somewhere between 70 and 100, it's devastating".

Tornadoes are wreaking havoc across several US states, with workers trapped in an Amazon warehouse in Illinois.

One person also died and 20 people were trapped inside in an Arkansas nursing home after it partly collapsed, Craighead county judge Marvin Day told the Associated Press.

The building was cleared around 90 minutes later but searches are continuing, he said, adding that some residents had been hiding in the basement as the tornado approached.

Malaysia has been hit by some of the worst flooding to hit the country in decades.

Over the weekend torrential rain battered the country and caused severe flooding in eight states, partially submerging some towns and villages.

It is believed at least 14 people have died as a result of the floods and tens of thousands have been evacuated from their homes.

The Malaysian Military are running search and rescue operations by boats and delivering supplies to people who are still trapped in their homes.

The situation could get worse as the Meteorological Department predicted more heavy rainfall and storms in the coming days, which could lead to more flooding.

Meanwhile in other news.

The place I used to work in was recently pummelled by a typhoon.

Not unheard of but in all the time I was there the ‘big one’ was noticeable by its absence. Though in times past they do come along. I experienced some notable floods but the town of Roxas I once described as like a Western film set ‘a dusty one horse town without the horse’ is in ruins.

Houses of nipa palm and bamboo do not survive a storm but even here it seems even some of the concrete structures were destroyed. Road access from the south is no more and even bridges I thought would survive have been washed out.

It’s of course a heaven sent opportunity for a munificent China to move in. We’ll have to see what happens.

Interesting that South Korea though is active with food aid. Have to see how the US will react.

Yes as a result of more meridional type synoptics?

Thinking about the Arctic, how do you see or explain the much reduced ice thaw days this year (earlier post) in relation to the 'more extremes in all directions' and more meridional synoptics which is behind that position?

Even the greatest team that wins a league loses a few matches.

Reduced ice thaw in some places. More in others.  Increasing  Extremes.

(and since I know you want me too say it: global warming)

The reduced summer Ice thaw is in a place universally accepted to have a greater temperature response than elsewhere to global warming. This being the case, it should be considered reasonable to expect The Arctic Basin to respond to global cooling more quickly than elsewhere on Earth.

I am not suggesting that global cooling has started - there is no evidence to support that, but if a trend in the Arctic of reduced ice thawing develops, then we should take notice. Meanwhile like the extreme high temperatures in Perth, it is worth noting - and in these times, imo, is totally unexpected.
