Yes it looked as though the Met Office went for the risk averse approach where over-egging a non event is a lot less damaging than non forecasting a serious event

You could even tell from yesterday's graphics of the approaching front that this was looking more like a rain event for most

I can perhaps forgive them for a yellow warning as snow is pretty rare these days and we did get a cm. But an Amber is just embarrassing,  absolutely no justification for it.

Seems odd and I wasn't aware of it. Perhaps there technical problems with their website / app? I don't think this event ever looked like an amber. Personally , I thought the snow earlier this week had the potential to be more disruptive. That seems to have been the case, although I'm not sure yet how bad things are in East Anglia.

There have been some shockers recently by the met office, why wasn't an amber warning issued for parts of Yorkshire a week last Friday?

It had Alex Deakin on their broadcast that same day showing the preciptation  clearing southwards and the radar still had it over northern England.

The Bank Holiday Monday after Christmas, the text forecast said for my region

"After a frosty start, southernmost parts may see some wintry showers early on, these quickly clearing south leaving largely dry conditions"

There was an area of snow that could clearly be seen on the radar affecting the south of the region an hour before the text forecast was released!

No technical problems.  It's a genuine Amber warning.  Just a shockingly poor one.

Yes they make a lot of mistakes for such a distinguished organisation.

I was surprised by the warnings issued by the meto yesterday. I have seen similar situations in the past with a greater depth of cold ahead of the approaching system still only give a few cm.

Warnings must now be issued if they believe their is a 1% chance or higher of disruption.
I may not have a degree in maths or physics but to my amateur eyes this system did look very unlikely to cause any issues.

I wasn't up early enough to see whether there was any trace of sleetiness or snow in the precipitation, but as a local PWS shows that at the time the precipitation started both temp. and DP were above zero I very much doubt it, and by first light it was clearly liquid. So another bout of cold rain. Bleurgggghhh.

Regarding the warnings I think based on the time they were issued they would have been from the 12Z UKV run, which was quite bullish for snow. The 18Z UKV hugely reduced the amount of settling snow but I imagine the feeling would have been that removing the warning after just a few hours (and overnight when few people would notice) would just cause confusion.

Well the forecast I saw said East Anglia. Looking at the snow radar that's where it was mostly. We don't have many members from there but on the Southern extreme i got what I expected. 30 minutes of snow and a light dusting before rain. That was the first snow here for three years so only a general moan!. Didn't we used to have someone from Braintree (Miss dot.com?) in the middle of the amber warning.

Not sure if it's Euro4 or UKV but one of those models should be binned. Talk about GFS snow predictions!

I am sure all models are rubbish anyway and nothing came off on the ground temps. how many times they show very low day or night temps but in reality we not getting any or less snow when it cold enough.  Other day Steve Murr posted the Ceefext weather page and they always seem to come off well when i was young.  I remember they put heavy snow for tonight events and every time i get up i open the curtains to see all white outside.

Lately all models kept wanting to keep the LP over Norway should be dismissed and ignored fully as they never work for here and get different results as a outcome.

Had a couple of centimetres here until about an hour ago when it turned to rain. Horrible.

What's also annoying is the temp here while it was snowing was 0.5c and now its pouring with rain it's still 0.5c.

Yet another lamentable day from this utterly dire bleak and depressing travesty of a winter.

4C, grey and windy following another 8mm of disgusting 3 degrees rain overnight

It's just getting worse and worse. Hasn't dropped below freezing since 11pm on Monday but has also failed to reach 5C in that time. The worst winter weather anywhere on the planet. It's stupefyingly grim and horrible.

The mean temperature so far this month has been 1.8C. Nowhere else on the planet would be that cold and at the same time only manage 2cm of snow and less than 50 hours below freezing out of over 360 hours. It's the level of wintriness that would be expected from a January 3 or more degrees warmer.

I did see one forecast for this winter that went for a similar winter to 2013/14. Can't remember where or who by but it was spot on. These days the only chance of success with a seasonal forecast is to predict the worst case scenario then add even more misery to the mix

Just endless rain with nothing pleasurable or interesting. Monotonous and soul destroying in the extreme

So from the moan I am getting parts of central and south eastern areas including London /home counties had snow but it appears as if the snow fell like between 4am and 6am when many were asleep and has turned back to cold rain but why a yellow or amber met office warning I don't know. Gosh! Is this the trop response from the SSW everyone? This is a sick joke furthermore the models for the next two weeks look abysmal fro snow in the south. I am keen to see what Richard of Aberdeen will report.

Indeed. If you think you've missed out I suggest other people are trying to cook your goose. If I was able to send the last 6 hours of weather we've had here to you I would be more than happy to do so.
