Weather forecast UK: 100-day storm to batter Britain until 2020 in washout

Britain is braced for a wash-out winter with three months of storms and torrential downpours – starting today. Weather forecast experts say unprecedented rainfall could be dumped on the country over the next 100 days. The warning comes as a 1,000-mile-wide, low-pressure vortex is set to batter the UK until Wednesday bringing rain and gusts of up to 60mph in the north west. It threatens to become autumn’s first named storm, with large areas of the nation facing six inches of rain and 22ft waves predicted.

And forecasters predict severe wind and rain could batter us into January – heralding a wet and windy end to the year. Gales of more than 100mph are expected, which could cause power cuts and travel chaos. It is more bad news after the Daily Star Sunday revealed last week that an Arctic freeze is on the way.

Wednesday 9 October – Sunday 13 October

Windy and showery with prolonged rain at times.

The remainder of this week will be often windy with showers and temperatures near or a little above normal. Most places will have rather mild nights too, with any frost limited to upland glens of northeast Scotland.

On Wednesday, much of the UK will have some bright or sunny intervals. However, it will be breezy with showers in places; the showers most frequent and heavy in the west of the UK and also in the far south-east of England. Into Wednesday night, it will remain breezy with further showers in the west.

Thursday and Friday will have further showers or longer outbreaks of rain, most frequently in the north and west of the UK. The south-eastern quarter of England will have the best of any lengthier periods of dry weather. Over England and Wales, it will be windy on Friday, perhaps with gusts up to 40-50mph quite widely.

The unsettled theme will continue into this weekend with rain at times for many.

Monday 14 October – Sunday 20 October

Unsettled with rain and brisk winds at times.

The unsettled theme to the weather looks like persisting through next week. Low pressure areas over the north-east Atlantic will bring bands of rain and showers to many areas. The rain is likely to be heavy at times, particularly over western areas, bringing a threat of local flooding. The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong winds at times. Current indications are for the strongest winds and most widespread rain to be around the middle part of next week.

Despite an unsettled picture, it will be a rather mild week for most with temperatures mainly a little above the seasonal average. Once again, there should be a lack of night frosts. However, it does look like turning a touch cooler towards the end of the week, perhaps with winds switching from a south or south-westerly to a westerly direction by then.

Monday 21 October – Sunday 3 November

Further wet and windy weather for a time.

Unsettled conditions are expected to persist for a while longer with further bands of rain and brisk winds spreading from the west at times. Initially, it should stay rather mild too with temperatures a little above the seasonal average.

However, towards the turn of the month, we expect a more changeable weather pattern over the UK as low pressure areas starts to alternate with high pressure areas. Therefore, we should see some lengthier drier and calmer interludes in between the bands of rain. Temperatures are likely to fall nearer to the seasonal average, too, perhaps with a few chillier nights and occasional mist and fog.

This weekend will be unsettled at times. On Saturday, southern England and south Wales will have the focus of the unsettled weather with a lot of cloud together with outbreaks of rain. Central and northern areas of the UK will be generally drier and brighter but northwest Scotland will see a few showers. On Sunday, outbreaks of rain look like shifting further north across UK. The south should become drier as the day progresses. Temperatures mainly near to the seasonal average this weekend albeit with a chilly night on Saturday night in northern Scotland, perhaps with a frost in sheltered glens. Through the early part of next week, there will be patchy rain, mainly in the south and west.

The best of the drier and brighter weather is likely over central and north-eastern areas of the UK. Winds will be mostly gentle. From Wednesday to Friday, it is likely to become breezier and showery, with the heaviest of the showers expected over western areas. More prolonged rain may sweep eastwards across the UK for a time on Wednesday. However, there should also be some bright or sunny interludes. Another breezy and showery week is expected as further low pressure areas approach from the Atlantic. Western areas of the UK are likely to be wettest with rainfall amounts well above average. Therefore, there is the risk of occasional local flooding in the west. Further east, there will be some showers and occasional bands of rain but with some decent drier and brighter periods of weather too. For much of the UK, temperatures are likely to be near to slightly above the seasonal average. Any frost issues should be quite localised with most nights being frost-free. However, there is a slight chance that low pressure ends up further south than expected, which would allow chillier air to move in from the north.

Monday 28 October – Sunday 10 November

Gradually turning drier and calmer

For the end of October and start of November we should see the weather becoming more changeable. Much of the UK is likely to have further rain at times. However, there should also be some drier, brighter and calmer days thanks to low pressure areas giving way to high pressure at times. Overall, rainfall amounts and temperatures are likely to be close to the seasonal average. By around the second week of November, high pressure is likely to become more predominant over northern Europe.

This means we are likely to see lengthier drier and calmer interludes of weather with rainfall becoming more infrequent. However, there will be an increasing risk of overnight mist and fog in places as winds ease, and this could linger well into the mornings. Temperatures should stay near normal but with occasional chilly nights. There is some uncertainty over the timing of the expected transition to drier and calmer weather. There is a slight risk that low pressure areas persist, bringing wet weather for longer.
