Well if you click on the Shetland link in Retron's post you will see that they have already reached 24C so the record has gone, subject to verification of course 🙂 It would be quite remarkable for Shetland to have the highest temperature in summer. I imagine it's happened a fair few times in winter with a cold & frosty high over the rest of the UK but Shetland being far enough north to be influenced by milder Atlantic air but in summer it must be breathtakingly rare.

All the more remarkable when you consider that at Edinburgh Gogarbank where it got up to 31.6°C just a couple of days ago, thus making that day Edinburgh's hottest day on record, it was a dismal 14.9°C at 12 noon today in the pouring rain with many places even during last winter, having seen higher temperatures than that on a number of days.

I know it actually cites the 23.4°C value in Wikipedia as well but I am pretty sure it is not the all-time Shetland record, perhaps for Lerwick?

Edit: It appears that Scatsta is not an official Met Office station included in the records, only Lerwick and four other more remote stations. Based on that information the record is probably officially 23.4°C although Scatsta has been as high as at least 27°C (2003). As Lerwick has “only” reached around 20.1°C today the record is safe for the moment.

It's been a warm week here. Nice that for a change we're the ones hanging on to the sunshine!

The weather here in Aberdeenshire this week (and including today) has been very nice - warm but not too hot with most days 23 to 27 degrees. 

You cannot beat this area during summer hot spells! The climate of Aberdeen city as described by Richard is not that experienced inland most of the time.

Apparently the Shetland record is 27.8C at Sumburgh of all places - the 23.4C quoted is the Lerwick record.

That sounds about right re. Shetland however it may not be an “official” value? By the way for the record, the climate  of Aberdeen is not always as “described” too.  (Either that or there are notable microclimates within the city!)

I think we give a general bad impression of our weather.  Many times I’ve been abroad and have been asked about rainy old Britain!  Abroad they seem to think it always rains here.  Probably due to other British holidaymakers saying so, half in jest!

Incredible couple of days weather and an amazing coincidence for me. On the day of the previous record I was playing cricket 10km from Brogdale. This time I was probably 400m from the Cambridge Botanical gardens. I'd booked a weekend away in Cambridge a couple of months back. Then I was worried about rain spoiling it - didn't think of checking if the hotel had air con - it didn't. 40C in a bedroom is no joke! Outside the wall of heat was nothing like anything I've ever felt anywhere in the world at any time except for maybe a 38C in Adelaide. Amazing experience for me - not so good for my wife who suffers in the sun at 24C !

Well I've been to Australia 4 times, once for a few weeks. The hottest I experienced was 38.5C in Adelaide and just below that in Cairns. I was in Cambridge on Thursday and it more than matched the wall of heat that I felt in Adelaide. It really was like standing a few yards from an open furnace. And on sleeping - try a south facing hotel (with no air conditioning) bedroom the night after 38.7C max. probably got 1 hours sleep even after a few beers!

A lot more here. Had 32.4mm of rain since midnight and 48mm in the last 24 hours, added with the fact that it's only 14C too. Terrible conditions for high summer, and an incredible contrast to earlier this week.

14.6mm yesterday and already 24mm today after a very wet spell in the early hours of this morning.

Quite a contrast as Scott says! Thankfully dry at the moment with the rain band not far away to the south and west of us.

Yet another day of rank humid grey easterly muck  I am yet to wake up to sunshine since returning to the UK. Woke up to grey rubbish in Stockport on Wednesday and grey rubbish every day here since Thursday.

Temperature hasn't dropped below 16C since Thursday or 15C since last Monday. There have been 12 nights this month it hasn't dropped below 14C which is more than any full calendar year has ever recorded except for 2006 and 2013  House won't cool down below 23C yet it is too unpleasant to sit outside. You couldn't make this awful summer weather up.

Yesterday was a rare dry day but ruined by the vile North Sea cloud. Only managed 5.6 hours sun which fell short of even the 5.7 hours recorded on Saturday 21st July 2012 and now it is back to depressing sunless gloom.

If there is not any siginificant improvent in August then this will be the first time since 2012 that both July and August have been poor

Lovely summers day again down here with temps widely mid 20's, and for a few possibly even the upper mid 20's or higher if it continues this way before the day is out.

Coming up to 2 inches of rain in the last 36 hrs here.

July will end up being a wet month here along with June that had over twice the monthly average.

Rainfall radar echoes over Greater Manchester area are horrendous especially east and northeast of the area at this time. Local flooding is going to be a problem and some streams and rivers must be close to flooding.

Yuk!  What a wet weekend!  Still raining and miserable!  Still can’t get back to work in the garden!  36c and sunshine on Thursday, 15c and raining yesterday!  

Yesterday I was thinking, it could only happen like that in England but then I remembered being in the Dom Rep in January 2015.  The first week it was full sun and 30 -33c. Then on the Saturday it rained all day, it was grey all day and 15c.  It was just like England!  However, The following day was hot and sunny again, as was the rest of the holiday!  Not like England then!  

I’m longing for 23-25c days again so I can get in the garden!

We've had exactly an inch of rain today, though as Ian points out above, the really intense stuff is now to the west of here  Just dribs and drabs here now.

A cloudy start but warm and sunny afternoon! Been a lovely few days here (just 20 odd miles from Richardabdn's cloudy hell).
