Still 28C at Heathrow and a whopping 30C at my nearest station London City airport at 9.20pm. Garden thermometer says 25.1C now but it feels very very warm still.

It did get a bit "intense" this afternoon didn't it?

Another very hot day goes out with a whimper rather than a bang here... Lack of thundery breakdowns seems to be a common theme here over recent Summers.

Give me whimpers over bangs at this time of year. Wet ends to hot spells (and this was only a 1 day wonder anyway) just mean worse weather in the following week. This coming week looks very pleasant indeed.

There should be two state-sanctioned thundery breakdowns per year, and they should be properly cataclysmic. First, at the end of whitsun bank holiday after an unseasonable hot spell, with terrifying forked lightning, hail and deafening thunder. Second, at the end of late August bank holiday with a high-based Spanish plume, continuous sheet lightning and a gust front causing localised wind damage. Before a warm and mellow September.

Here in Edinburgh though, we have now had two thundery days in the space of the last five days which means that there's been no shortage of thunderstorms up here recently.

What is even more remarkable is the manner in which today's events turned out to be far dramatic than what the model output had predicted leading up to that, otherwise I'm sure that you might have at least had some thoughts about trying to fit a storm watch video leading up to that, within your current busy schedule of updates.

Over the heat wave so far then; France has set an all-time record, and Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland have all set new June records:

That sounds pretty boring to me.

Gone windy and the breeze is from the west. The cold front is over us. And with that, the heatwave ends here.

Here's to the next heatwave thread, in 2020

Perhaps it will last more than one day

It had been the worse week and watching all the records gone on the other side of channel while we had good chances of 40-41C today failed due to lack of sunny hot days prior to that.  Must be the hottest quickie heatwave recorded as most quickie hot days are around 30-32C.  Today at 34C in Slough he heat were like Nicosia 34C heat when I was there last week.   Just a big shame that we had great chance of 40C or even 41C today and what it like the heat of 40C over here?  I been though that in Nicosia and they are intense.

Overall I do hope not to see this stupid set-up excuse just to keep UK out from getting extreme high temps.

It would have been interesting to see whether or not, the temperature in SE England might have gone above 40°C if the same synoptic set-up had been in place just now, as what delivered those temperatures of around 21°C down there back in February at the end of that complete non-event which was known as last "winter".

It will hopefully reach you later...

Yes, it did reach us.  We’d gone to sleep with all the bedroom windows and doors wide open and were woken by our bedroom door slamming shut about 10 o clock!

It meant a comfortable unbroken sleep for the rest of the night though.

I recall driving up through Senegal towards the Sahara and winding down the car window for a bit of "fresh air!" You only make that mistake once.

I remember getting into a car in Saudi Arabia that had been sitting in the sun all day. I just opened the back door and hopped in. You only make that mistake once too!

As for house temperatures, it's 34.4C in the east-facing bedroom upstairs, 29C in my west-facing bedroom (with the portable air-con going for the past 2 hours - yes, it's struggling!) and 25C in the east-facing kitchen, which is the coldest room in the house usually.

It's 27C outside and completely calm.

A hot, sticky and noisy night beckons. Noisy as I plan to leave the air-con running, but it's only a couple of feet away from the bed so earplugs are a must!

I made an ad-hoc swamp cooler on Thursday when the temperature went above 40C for the first time. It consisted of trays of smashed ice under the ceiling fan. Worked surprisingly well. In fact we had no problems sleeping even on Friday night despite reaching 43.5C in the afternoon.
