At first glance when I first look outside, it looks fairly clear. At this time of night though when it's completely dark, it's hard to really tell.

However the latest radar maps show that Storm Erik is approaching and since I can't see any stars just now, I would assume that there is probably at the very least, a veil of medium to high level cloud around ahead of that system which is being made even harder to spot by the fact that the Moon isn't in its proper phase just now to be around at this time of the night and thus, be able to show that up.

In the end, a total of 0.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 4.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A thoroughly wet and miserable morning here in Edinburgh, courtesy of Storm Erik which has now made its presence felt here.

Over recent months, we haven't exactly been getting a lot of rain in this part of the world and yet, it is absolutely chucking it down here at the moment as I write.

So far as 8am this morning, a total of 2.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 1.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations.

In addition to that, the wind has picked up as well. As that has happened as well though, the temperatures have ended up rising during the early hours of this month as our frost-free hell goes on.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature which was reached before midnight was 4.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning had now gone up to 8.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as milder air has moved in once again.

Absolutely vile wet dark morning with a strong SE wind as this rotten winter continues to plumb the depths.

It doesn't get any worse than this utter rubbish.

Still gusting near 50mph, rain has been rather trivial with under 2mm.

However gauge will barely catch half of it in this wind.

The earlier rain has now cleared away but today's rainfall so far as at 12 noon has now increased to 5.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 4.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, it has got a lot windier over time and at 12 noon, the wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank was gusting up to 41.6mph from the SW, with even the mean wind speeds there at that time getting up to 25.5mph.

However, the skies are now much clearer and the Sun is now shining here in Edinburgh with a total of 42 minutes of sunshine now being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

In addition to that, the temperatures have now reached double figures at all three of my local stations for the first time during this month and so, the temperature at 12 noon was 10.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Cloudy with occasional spits of light rain blowing about in a brisk SW wind, all making the current 9.8 c & 87% h feel rather cold & fresh.

For now, the wind doesn't appear to be that notable at this end, I think on this occasion the hilly built up bit to my SW is providing some shelter rather than coming straight in from the Channel via the harbour area.

A torrential pulse has formed just off the coast, and is now moving in with rates capable of dumping up to half inch of rain every 6 minutes or so.

Extensive surface water. Flash flooding risk quite possible in areas with hills, but here we're just flat so lots of huge puddles, and flooded roads.

Edit: Rain radar shows cores now 96-124mm per hour

Edited to add: I was just thinking that I haven't heard rain being blown against the window panes for a very long time.  I don 't keep records to check, but I'd say it was over a year.

The sunshine which I reported earlier on didn't last for long, and it wasn't long before it became cloudy once again with some light rain. During the rest of this afternoon, that cloud has come and gone with further light showers at times, and only fleeting glimpses of the Sun at times.

This means that a total of just 1.6 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon.

However, today's rainfall totals so far have now increased to 6.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon, along with 4.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This now makes today, the wettest day of this winter so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

It is also still very windy with mean wind speeds at Edinburgh Gogarbank getting up to 26.1mph from the SW as at 4pm this afternoon with gusts up to 48.5mph.

Today's maximum temperature was 10.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so today was clearly the mildest day of this month so far at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 8.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
