Pretty horrendous conditions possible in a few places due to the freezing rain. I think Sheffield later tomorrow could be pretty treacherous with snow over higher ground in the west and a freezing rain risk elsewhere 

Yes, I know that a wind from the SE isn't exactly Richard's favourite wind direction although we have the same problems here in Edinburgh when the wind is directly from the east or from the ENE for exactly the same reasons, especially here in the north of Edinburgh and right on the coast itself (further inland, that effect is often not as bad).

Yes, I think that sums it up very nicely. 

It’s not due until early afternoon tomorrow. Whether you have enough elevation or are far enough inland is another issue. I wouldn’t like to call it and you may end up with a lot of cold rain (like here) or a lot of snow (like to your west).

Good test tomorrow for  Met Office automated vs text forcasts with the former predicting snow most of the afternoon and the later (and warnings) freezing rain. Be interesting to see the outcome.

Ah, thanks Neil! I'm familiar with Gavin's Week Ahead forecast, which he posts a link to in a thread each Saturday, but I hadn't realised that he did lots more.  (And thanks also to johncs for the YouTube link.)

Yes, and that also includes being a member of this forum.

Apart from the usual Gavin's Thoughts threads which he starts here every weekend, he also occasionally contributes to other threads such as the MO thread and the media thread although he doesn't post as often on here as the likes of you and I since he also runs his own discussion chat stuff (which you can access just by being a member of Disqus).

Also if you have been to his website and looked at any of his videos from there by clicking on them, you might also notice that what you are actually clicking on there is just a link to that video on his YouTube channel.

Whether the dewpoint remains low enough, or the cold layer remains intact for long enough, remains to be seen!

Indeed, it's going to be knife-edge stuff! (Although it usually is - aside from the Beast earlier this year).

+ 0.7, dew -2.5C right now, so for the time being the cold air holds firm in this corner of England. The rain / snow / whatever on the radar is really struggling to move NE at the moment, as it's fizzling in the cold, dry air over Kent and East Sussex. I guess that when it starts making it further east it'll be a sign the low-level cold and dry air has been mixed out...

Ironic that this is how most of the U.K. sees it's snow!!

5°C and very windy here. The SEly wind that brings others wintry presents brings nothing but the meteorological equivalent of a lump of coal. It will also be of interest to see who ends up on the ice list. (I will resist the one about freezing rein-deer ).

Same here Alan, there's a snow reports thread active. I've put a couple of reports in there 👍

The temperature at 850 hPa is forecast to be above freezing here around now, ahead of the front, so not expecting any snow here.

Thats despite the promising surface parameters. Currently +2C/-4C .

Will also be interesting to see if the precipitation breaks up as it hits Greater Manchester/North Cheshire as so often happens when there’s a SE’ly element to the wind. 

I noticed on the Metcheck precip. type radar (https://www.metcheck.com/WEATHER/precipitype.asp#) that there was some snow on the leading edge of the ppn from the Sussex coastal area southwards, but it pretty much disappeared around 10.00am. So if it doesn't reappear, we'll be looking at sleet down here (Edited to add: even the area of sleet is diminishing rapidly).  That's assuming the precip. type display is accurate, and I haven't seen any opinion that it isn't. 

So it's now looking like quite a widespread freezing rain event? That in itself is pretty interesting as I am in the understanding that freezing rain is remarkably rare in the UK, especially over such an area.
