It could be quite snowy on inland hills and mountains up here for a while. For here I can’t wait for the chilling persistent rain and grey skies.

The upcoming filth will just confirm what I've been saying: this late autumn/early winter has been the vilest since 2002. Even then we had a brief respite in the form of a frosty high just after mid-December whereas this year is just beyond hopeless.

Shocked to even hear of it being cols enough for snow away from Scotland & the hills..

I suspect trans Pennine routes will be very tricky on Saturday. Down here we may be in a snow shadow due to the predicted SE wind direction.

Think areas above 200m might see a transient covering with low-lying areas seeing nothing settling with sleet, wet flakes at best.

The MetO automated is going for sleet showers today down here, blown in from the sea. Funnily enough this has been hinted at over the past several days by various models, albeit not the GFS; it relates to a very shallow layer of cold air coming in from the east. Whether it's deep enough to support any flakes making it to ground level remains to be seen, but the UKV model at least thinks it's likely.

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the media thread, but the MetO has issued a yellow warning for Snow and Ice for Scotland and Northern England on Saturday: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings#?date=2018-12-15&id=079ad488-120f-4d8f-aec2-0a9f1fed083b

I'm surprised that I'm the first to post this - others on here are usually ahead of me on this sort of thing...

Expecting sleet for a while here, might be some snow mixed it

As at midday (today, Friday) here, there is still frost on the ground in shady parts

I'm guessing if this happens tomorrow, possibility of freezing rain / ice for a while which could be more slippery than any snow

Have to wait and see

Looks like the warning is mostly now for freezing rain as the warning area has been extended southwards

The ice warnings are due to the risk of freezing rain (Gavin P. mentioned that risk of freezing rain in last night's snow watch video). That is happening because there are slightly milder upper air temperatures moving in from the west and it wouldn't surprise me if we ended up with a similar situation to what we had just last week when it started raining here, despite the temperatures being below freezing at the time and any snow only really falling over high ground.

I can't believe I'm posting this but it looks like the south coast has beaten a fair few up north to snow in this current cold snap...

In the forest just to the north of Portsmouth and we've just had a spell of light snizzle with the odd bigger flake thrown in!! 😯😯

Looking at the radar it appears that it's moving in from the southeast.

Frost never lifted from here today and now it will start reforming so tomorrow could be very interesting depending on when the precip gets here?

If the block proved stronger than forecast ( as it appears to have been all week?) then we could end up with a 'stall line' of heavy snow down the country tomorrow?
