The shadow of the house on the lawn reaches the tree-fern and pond.

The patio beneath the walnut tree is once more bathed in sunlight.

The paddling pool hangs limply across the redundant BBQ, acting a s a rain-cover.

The sunflowers start to lean and droop.

Walking on the lawn, even after several sunny days, leaves damp patches on socks.

Wistful glances shift from the sun-loungers to the log-pile.

House spiders colonise the bathrooms and run sub-10 across the living room floor during favourite programmes.

Nobody gives a damn what the Autumn weather will be really. There’s no such thing as a “legendary Autumn”. Nobody says “could this finally be the memorable Autumn we’ve been waiting for”, or pattern-matches hopefully

What counts as exciting Autumn weather? Hot sun in September is really just an extension of summer, like the snow in March was an extension of winter, not exciting spring weather. Snow in November is an early onset of winter. Gales? They’re not really season-specific because they can be just as bad in winter. Probably the closest we get is Indian summer in October, but that’s just nice rather than exciting.

Other countries get something akin to exciting weather that only happens in Autumn or spring: tornadoes in Spring in the US, and hurricanes / cyclones in the subtropics.

That's true to a certain extent but I think it's wrong to say that nobody cares what autumn weather will be like - at the very least I think most of us would be unhappy with a very wet, unsettled autumn. My preference is for a warm, sunny September and an anticyclonic, frosty October. 

November, especially as the month progresses, is the time when my attention starts turning towards snow, but I would still be happy with an anticyclonic November. 

Basically, as long as it isn't windy or wet, I'm pretty happy.

Last evening felt more like the end of September rather than the last week of August. The light seemed dimmer - also with the heavy cloud cover it was dark by 8.30.

Gut feeling says to me this will be a cold autumn - But obviously I can't back that up scientifically. But somethings tells me.

It's those dark evenings that really become noticeable at this time of year, particularly as I have a little boy that goes to bed at 8 so "me time" is 8.15 or later which is now getting quite dark. In June, I sometimes get to mow the grass when he has gone to bed but right now because of that and the fact that we are always on the verge of a shower, the grass is getting quite long and the weeds have shot up everywhere!

When temperature drops to 7.7c.

I was going to say something very similar. I put it on for an hour or two first thing this (Saturday) morning.

Managed to hold off, but I think tomorrow will be the day probably. Hope its still working. Its a very old boiler!

A low temperature bonfire is very bad in terms of pollution (both air pollution and ash). Worse than diesel actually. 

He lives in the middle of nowhere though, I think. I had a high temperature bonfire at my place in France this year which was rather “fun”. Everything so dry that a huge pile of garden waste combusted in about 5 minutes and the flames were shooting up to roof level. Had a few hairy moments when they got close to the trees.
