The shadow of the house on the lawn reaches the tree-fern and pond.

The patio beneath the walnut tree is once more bathed in sunlight.

The paddling pool hangs limply across the redundant BBQ, acting a s a rain-cover.

The sunflowers start to lean and droop.

Walking on the lawn, even after several sunny days, leaves damp patches on socks.

Wistful glances shift from the sun-loungers to the log-pile.

House spiders colonise the bathrooms and run sub-10 across the living room floor during favourite programmes.

Funny how Autumn is really not a season, just an interlude between seasons.

Nobody gives a damn what the Autumn weather will be really. There’s no such thing as a “legendary Autumn”. Nobody says “could this finally be the memorable Autumn we’ve been waiting for”, or pattern-matches hopefully

What counts as exciting Autumn weather? Hot sun in September is really just an extension of summer, like the snow in March was an extension of winter, not exciting spring weather. Snow in November is an early onset of winter. Gales? They’re not really season-specific because they can be just as bad in winter. Probably the closest we get is Indian summer in October, but that’s just nice rather than exciting.

Other countries get something akin to exciting weather that only happens in Autumn or spring: tornadoes in Spring in the US, and hurricanes / cyclones in the subtropics.

November, especially as the month progresses, is the time when my attention starts turning towards snow, but I would still be happy with an anticyclonic November.

Basically, as long as it isn't windy or wet, I'm pretty happy.

Last evening felt more like the end of September rather than the last week of August. The light seemed dimmer - also with the heavy cloud cover it was dark by 8.30.

Gut feeling says to me this will be a cold autumn - But obviously I can't back that up scientifically. But somethings tells me.

It's those dark evenings that really become noticeable at this time of year, particularly as I have a little boy that goes to bed at 8 so "me time" is 8.15 or later which is now getting quite dark. In June, I sometimes get to mow the grass when he has gone to bed but right now because of that and the fact that we are always on the verge of a shower, the grass is getting quite long and the weeds have shot up everywhere!

another sign of autumn is the night temps begin to drop out of the teens on a regular basis.

First day since Nune that I’ve come home from work and put trousers, not shorts on. Still in the t shirt though.

Looked at the meat in the freezer and actually quite fancying a roast this Sunday. And the courgette-cum-marrows in the garden are making me feel almost ready for Autumn, on the food front.

When Gavin P. announces that he is about to do the sneak preview video for the winter updates which will then follow on from that, I know that our summer has well and truly just about come to an end.

I’m tempted to put the central heating on for the first time since May. I live in a big poorly insulated house!

Anything below 15c by night and 20c by day would feel cold to us southerners!! We have had such a hot summer when in fact this is normal or just below - it's more the fact that we have had 3 months of above or well above average temperatures both by day and night!

Spent a day at Chessington with eldest and his best friend. Wished I’d brought a cardigan in the 90 minute waits for the main rides.

But I’m barbecuing tonight (to eat inside).

Am cutting our meadow at the moment before wind and rain turn it to thick lying thatch. It's lovely out there with the ripening apples and the flower seed heads and golden long grass. We've got a bonfire smouldering away adding that special smell to the air this evening which actually feels crisp.

It’s happening fast this weekend. First time I’ve put on a long sleeved shirt outside work since May, first time internal temp dropped below 20C, first actual classic warm front over London for goodness knows how long.
