This just shows the impact which just one weather system can have on our rainfall totals.

Up until just a few days ago, this month hadn't actually benn all that wet here in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, with the total at Edinburgh Gogarbank looking unlikely to even reach the 1981-2010 October average for that particular station.

Now though, it is a completely different story as more than 100 mm of rain has now been recorded at all of my local stations here in Edinburgh, so this has now ended up being a thoroughly wet and miserable month here in the end in terms of both the number of rain days, and in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

Up to a ludicrous 134.0mm now which ties with 2006 as the 3rd wettest October I've recorded after 2020 (184.0mm) and 2009 (153.8mm)

It'll be in outright 3rd place after yet another hellish write-off weekend day

97.1 hours of rainfall up to yesterday putting it in a good position to beat the total of 108.3 hours from 2009. It will already have surpassed last years total of 99.1 hours

Today is also the 24th day with measurable rain beating the total of 23 days in 2006 and 2011

Given the unprecedented run of wet Octobers it shouldn't even be possible to keep breaking these awful records

This morning's weather front produced a total of just 1.2 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That brings this month's total to 110.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 126.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

More rain is forecast for tomorrow, but that is forecast to move through fairly quickly and it wouldn't surprise me if this resulted in very little or possibly even nothing in the way of any more significant rainfall here during the rest of this month.

Very wet spells never last all that long here, and it often dries up here much quicker than it is forecast to, often with the synoptic setup still looking unsettled at the time.

It is therefore possible that this process might be underway yet again, thus resulting in us getting very little in the way of rainfall from this morning's weather front.

This morning's rain amounted to just 4.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, despite being fairly heavy when it came along.

That brings this month's total to 114.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 128.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, today is already an official rain day at both of those stations and so only 2 official rain days need to be recorded during November at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, in order for this autumn to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

Final October total here is 93mm, 166% of average.     The 5th wettest October in the last 40 years here.

Notable that up until the 29th, the total here was still close to average, then 36mm fell in just the last 2 days to take it from 57mm to 93mm.

178 total for month

02 November 2021 20:54:11

157.6mm (190%) was the ludicrous final total following on from an even more ridiculous 184.0mm (222%) last October

The last time successive Octobers both recorded 150mm+ was in 1906 and 1907 (158mm and 153mm respectively at Cranford House). The only other occasion this has happened with any month in the last 160 years was November in 1940 and 1941 (185mm and 154mm respectively at Mannofield Reservoir)

I have now recorded four months inside two years with 140mm+ (Nov 2019, Oct 2020, Dec 2020, Oct 2021) - the same  as there were in the previous 15 years (Oct 2009, Dec 2012, Jan 2014, Jan 2016)

What made this month so bad aside, from the stinking weekends, was the persistent and relentless onslaught of wet conditions. Such a high rainfall total would normally be made up of at least one or two very wet days for example last year had 57mm on the 3rd and 34mm on the 22nd. This year no day even managed 25mm

25 rain days was reached for only the 4th month in 15 years (along with April 2012, Jan 2014 and Nov 2019) while 23 wet days was a new record for any month beating 22 days in Nov 2014 and 110.3 hours of rainfall was a new record for October

... and after all that the tedious horror continues into November. 186mm in 38 days now with only 7 of them dry

The only worse spell of unrelentingly awful weather I've experienced was the final six weeks of 2002
