I think they are looking at a historical event.

I live just outside of Kendal, having lived in town close to the river in 2015 (we moved up slope because of flooding fears, the floodwater reached our next door neighbours). I've been watching this situation develop for the last 3-4 days and I fear we are in for a very similar event as Desmond.  I compared the 5th Dec 2015 chart with the fax chart and the hugely warm and wet fetch from the southwest plus the fact that Cumbria is sandwiched between two fronts is pretty much the same.

The river level in the centre of Kendal has now gone above the "flooding is likely" line, and we're not even into the amber warning period yet which runs for 36 hours from 3pm.

It really does look like a classic "atmospheric river" set up.

I hope I'm not right, but I fear I am, and I fear that my county will yet again be on the receiving end of an extreme weather event.

Yes it looks very similar indeed to 2015 and also 6 years before in 2009 . Now just 6 years later again and worryingly similar totals seem very likely

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank (shown as station 1 below) and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (shown below as station 2) is as follows:

Total Amount Since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 25.8 mm at station 1, 26.8 mm at station 2 (as at 9am BST this morning (08:00 UTC))

That makes yesterday our wettest day of this autumn so far.

Total For This Month So Far: 87.4 mm (103.4 % of LTA) at station 1, 98.0 mm (129.6 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Month So Far: 14 (109.4 % of LTA) at station 1, 18 (145.2 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Month So Far: 7 at station 1, 6 at station 2

This means that more rain has now fallen during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1981-2010 October average for that particular station so that this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

This also means that more rain has now fallen during this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than the 1981-2010 October average for that particular station so that this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

Total For This Autumn So Far: 142.4 mm (65.9 % of LTA) at station 1, 154.0 mm (71.2 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Autumn So Far: 26 (71.8 % of LTA) at station 1, 29 (85.8 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Autumn So Far: 22 at station 1, 20 at station 2

This means that just another 5 or more official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of November at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in order for this autumn to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

Total Amount During This Year So Far: 632.2 mm (83.8 % of LTA) at station 1, 635.6 mm (90.24 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Year So Far: 102 (74.3 % of LTA) at station 1, 111 (89.4 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Year So Far: 149 at station 1, 145 at station 2

LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at the particular station in question.

All of this data has been taken from SEPA with each observation day starting and ending on 09:00 UTC on each day.

Not quite, the record 24 hour rainfall was set during Storm Desmond in Dec 2015. Also at Honister, a whopping 341.4mm.

Of course, my parents live down in Hawick and I was there on a couple of occasions during the summer.

Luckily, they live on fairly high ground and are unlikely to be affected by that in any way.

However, my heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this especially with all of that coming on top of everything which we all had to experience at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Borrowdale is one of my favourite places in the world and I know it well, having been visiting there since about 11/12 (used to jump off one of the twin arches of the bridge at Grange, into the river below)

Also been just upriver from Grange when a genuine cloudburst hit one hot and sultry late afternoon - we had to run as we were alone the wrong side of the river and needed to wade across to get to my car, and the river was visibly rising. Sat in the car, which was parked on an incline on a dirt track that had become a torrent, actually wondering if we'd get washed away.

That's the 'Jaws of Borrowdale' for you...

More rain in the Lake District tonight, although more fringing the SE Lakes.

This time it's a front rather than an 'atmospheric river' (agree it's a cool graphic) and it's been stuck for a few hours, stretching from Devon/Cornwall, through Wales, into NW Midlands and NW England, to N Yorks and Durham.

Horrible and miserable. The dog won't be getting her nighttime walk tonight!

118mm of rain up to 9am this morning at Swanston through October. It has rained constantly since then so has been raining for 3 days now, around 60mm from this waving front.
The light easterly has veered strong westerly as the circulation goes through and it's getting colder as the day goes on with lashing rain now
