I do visit occasionally

Didn't reply to the ask about the Aurora as no such luck this far south, plus it's probably never really dark enough here either, but would love to witness it with my own eyes one day.You post some very interesting tidbits in here so please keep it up

Will do, WW! We have seen auroras in Lincolnshire - but rarely.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G1-CLASS): Yesterday, the sun launched a coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth. Forecasters are divided on when it might arrive--sometime between midday on March 27th and early March 28th. The impact could spark minor G1-class geomagnetic storms with equinox auroras boosted by the "Russell-McPherron effect.

I do sometimes, especially when you post the latest news.

I like to make more contributions on TWO, but I'm poor at communications and the posts don't seem to attract much interest (I posted some interesting article about lightning but strangely no-one was interested), so I know your feeling.

Your posts on here are interesting and much appreciated. Keep up the good work!

thanks OzAu.

Here's an interesting piece:

A 'CANNIBAL CME' IS APPROACHING EARTH:

A strong G3-class geomagnetic storm is possible later this week when a 'Cannibal CME' hits Earth's magnetic field. It's a 'cannibal' because it ate one of its own kind en route to our planet. The mash-up of two CMEs could spark naked-eye auroras visible from northern-tier US states. Full story @ https://spaceweather.com/

Enjoy.

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected a powerful explosion on the sun. The X1.3-class flare on March 30th (1737 UT) caused a shortwave radio blackout over the Americas and has almost certainly hurled a CME toward Earth. Follow this developing story:

What happened or went wrong with the forecast aurora this week? I read an article that said solar flares were on way and should result in visible aurora last night. However, last night came and went with no alerts ?

Amber alert in progress. Look north. Back to the Full Moon. Good luck.

Something to look out for! Errr - maybe we won't be around to see it!

Nasa scientists spy 'largest comet ever seen'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-61097826

A comet with a nucleus 50 times bigger than normal is barrelling towards Earth at 22,000 miles per hour.
Nasa's Hubble telescope has determined the comet's icy nucleus has a mass of about 500 trillion tonnes and is 85 miles (137km) wide - larger than the US state of Rhode Island.
But not to worry. The closest it will get is one billion miles away from the Sun, and that won't be until 2031.

There's a lot to look for this week.

This Week's Sky at a Glance, April 22 – 30
https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/this-weeks-sky-at-a-glance-april-22-30-2/

THURSDAY, APRIL 28
The Lyrid meteor shower should be active late tonight and late tomorrow might, though the shower's timing is less than ideal for North America. Best times to try watching are from about 11 p.m. until moonrise both nights, writes Bob King in Celebrate Spring with the Lyrids.

FRIDAY, APRIL 29
Venus-Jupiter conjunction. Set your alarm to get up and look low in the southeast about 60 to 45 minutes before your sunrise time. Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest objects after the Sun and Moon, are a spectacularly close ½° apart! On Sunday morning they'll be only a trace farther apart, with Jupiter now to Venus's upper right.

Clear skies!

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: The sun produced another X-class solar flare today. Even though the responsible sunspot was located behind the edge of the sun, enough radiation reached our planet to cause a strong shortwave radio blackout.

Very interesting. They're formed by volcanic activity but different from mare forming volcanism. Wonder what age these were formed.
