The new James Webb space telescope has suffered slight damage from a tiny meteoroid - and there have been several other minor impacts already.

I spotted that story, Peter. There's a lot of stuff swilling about up there and it does not have to be big to be a problem, given the kinetic energy involved. They have procedures in place to hopefully compensate for the occasional "dings" that will inevitably happen.

This kind of scenario was a popular story line in early 20cent Sci Fi - Heinlein etc.

"Dodson, Jarman and Jensen ship out on the Aes Triplex. Their first real mission is to help search for a missing research vessel, the Pathfinder, in the asteroid belt. They find it, but all aboard are dead, the unlucky victims of a fast-moving object that punctured the ship when the armored outer airlock door was open...."

MAGNIFICENT CME: Earlier today, an unusually slow solar flare hurled a magnificent CME into space. The explosion and its afterglow lasted nearly 8 hours. The CME could sideswipe Earth's magnetosphere later this week, producing minor geomagnetic storms

Arrival time of 0900 UT on June 15th? Glancing blow?

Hopefully a full on blow. I'd like to see how the plebs cope without electricity for a few weeks

Thanks for that, V-3. Really impressive.

Nearest thing like that I've observed myself [no photo] was an RAF Tornado superimposed on the Sun on a solarscope.

A bit of slightly different Solar news...
"The impact of a “snake-like filament” from the Sun, which Nasa predicts will happen on 19 July, will be a “direct hit” according to Dr Tamitha Skov, adding that we should “expect signal disruptions on Earth’s nightside”. It is also possible that aurora might be visible in some regions of the Earth."

Space Weather:
SOLAR TSUNAMI AND CME: An explosion on the sun during the early hours of July 21st created a solar tsunami wave and hurled a CME toward Earth. The CME's arrival on July 23rd could spark minor to moderate geomagnetic storms with auroras at high latitudes

The word "decommissioning" was used and I wondered what that might actually involve.

You may not have seen this latest mind-boggling photo in New Scientist.

Thanks Roger - that image is absolutely fantastic. The galaxy is apparently 150,000 light years across which makes the head swim! Normally a galaxy is described as being X million light years away which the mind can't really grasp, but seeing that galaxy side on and knowing it's 150,000 light years across really brings the scale to life.
