Here is the position at the end of February. A relatively warm start to the year but nothing exceptional. We will drop back a bit relative to the long run average by the end of March.

A cool March means that overall 2016 remains above average but not by much

A bit late but here is the latest chart up to the end of April.

The warmer than average January and February have been offset by a cool March and April so overall we are now close to average for the year as a whole.

Here is the latest position to the end of September. We are now just over 0.5C above the 1981-2010 mean.

Overall a very warm year so far. Not as warm as 2014 but the second warmest first 9 months since 2007.

It seems amazing how high the annual CET has risen despite the chilly March-April. The failure of properly cold weather to arrive in Feb was a a significant deviation from my expectations at the end of 2015, but even with that considered, the warmth May-Sep has been beyond anything I would dare have called for.

I almost want a warm Oct-Dec to break the 2014 record (would take some doing though!).

Almost 😉
