Up to a highly appropriate 66.6mm now for this unspeakably vile month in which every day consists of the same suicide-inducing grey wet rubbish

A continuation of the ridiculous rainfall levels from last October which recorded 184mm and was in the top 5 wettest of all time (>160 years).

At least last year there were several dry days, sunshine and autumnal colour to be seen last year.  Just one completely dry day from this foul month and one day with a trace. A sick joke.

Last week the precipitation outlook showed only a few mm and we end up with the worst settled spell in meteorological history with every single day since last Tuesday recording measurable rainfall including yesterday which was supposed to be sunny but was just another day of grey, wet crud. Total of 44mm so over 10 times the projection

Words like 'revolting' and 'horrific' do not begin to describe how awful this month is.

Number of Dry Days During This Month So Far: 3 at station 1, 2 at station 2

This means that just another 5 or more official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

Since 10am this morning, there has been a further 0.6 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with a further 1.0 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That now brings this this month's total to 27.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 38.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This also means that just another 4 or more official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

We are currently going through what is synoptically, a settled high pressure dominated spell of weather which would normally be very dry here.

It is true that our most recent rainfall totals haven't been all that high, but recent days have been nothing like as dry here as what you would normally expect from the current synoptic setup.

In addition to that, the model output is starting to look more unsettled synoptically during the second half of this month, so this month is now starting to look as though it might well end up being wetter than average here in the end after all.

23mm for the month so far, fairly dry.

On 735mm for the year now, so looks likely it will be dryer than the 1042mm last year.

I think the long term average here should be 800-850mm for the year, but hard to know exactly due to the steep gradients west to east with the Pennines. May also be getting wetter generally.

Yesterday's cold front brought a total of 3.0 mm of rain to Edinburgh Gogarbank, but just 0.8 mm to the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so the latter total means that this isn't enough for me to produce a full report on this occasion.

However, that brings this month's total to 30.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 39.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9am this morning.

The general outlook is still looking more unsettled in the latest model output, but we are not expecting any significant rainfall here until the beginning of next week.

81.2mm at the half way stage of this horror month. That's pretty much the whole month average and is the third wettest 1st half of October I've recorded after 99.4mm last year and 96.0mm in 2014  Most 16 year periods prior to this century probably wouldn't have had any.

Just revolting and looking at the all time records for consecutive wet Octobers it's no surprise it was set in the 21st Century.

Dyce recorded 116mm in 2001 and 230mm in 2002 to give an average of 173mm. 82mm required for me to beat that.

20th Century looks like it was 1932/33 with Mannofield recording 188mm in 1932 and 137mm in 1933 to give an average of 162.5mm. Just another 61mm needed to beat that

1932 to 1945 looks a dreadful run of Octobers with only 1936 dry but that's still one more than the last miserable 13 years have brought

Now just topped 100mm for month
johncs2016
19 October 2021 17:30:07

Today's dribs and drabs of rain amounted to just 0.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, this means that there has now been more official rain days at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this month than the 1981-2010 October average for that particular station so that this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days regardless of what happens during the rest of this month.

That brings this month's total to 51.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 63.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where at least another 12.0 mm of rain still needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual amounts.

I think that this will be achieved in the end, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we ended up struggling to get there.

This month is our wettest month of the year on average according to the 1981-2010 averages and even with the outlook for the rest of this month looking unsettled at times, nothing is happening just now to suggest that the final total at Edinburgh Gogarbank is going to exceed or even reach the 1981-2010 October average for there in the end.
