That's two substantial eruptions happening simultaneously.

Whilst not wanting to see a multitude of lives lost/destroyed, I'd be fascinated if there was a bit of a chain reaction of eruptions globally, with a few dozen big eruptions at the same time.

But rather different in nature - Fuego at a subducted plate margin , so water is carried down to the magma and the release of steam creates the ash clouds, Hawaii at a mid-ocean location with (mainly) simple upwelling of lava.

But you may get your wish for a third eruption https://watchers.news/2018/06/06/temperature-at-mt-ruapehu-crater-lake-is-rising-along-with-an-increase-in-volcanic-tremor-new-zealand/

Agung on Bali erupted a couple of hours ago with an ash plume over 5000 metres above sea level. Spectacular to watch live on the net, currently there is still a glow and lava near the surface at the top of the mountain, but this latest eruption might have eased significantly for now.

I've been to the area, but not to the particular volcano.

Popped up there a few years ago for a quick look around...What an amazing place...

Fairly quite on the seismic front for the past while, severe lack of swarms.

Sure seems busy on the magma front, though.

I suppose it depends on where it can or might leak out to make a difference.

Love a big blow up...but fcck me. ..Hope the volcanologist guys have a good grip on the situation.

Status of Öræfajökull volcano:

  • Öræfajökull volcano is showing clear signs of unrest with an inflation phase for at least a year and a half.

  • The inflation is ongoing and it is reflected by increased seismic activity and characteristic deformation pattern.

  • There are no signs of decrease in the inflation rate or the seismicity. The state of unrest persists despite a decrease in geothermal activity since last December.

  • The source causing the inflation is most likely injection of new magma. The volume change since the start of the unrest is of the order of magnitude of 10 million m3 (about 0.2 m3/sec) comparable to the intrusion activity in Eyjafjallajökull some years before the eruption in 2010.

  • New resistivity measurements indicate the presence of geothermally altered rocks at shallow levels inside the caldera consistent with intermittent high temperature geothermal activity as seen in many other volcanoes.

Scenarios and hazards:

  • Öræfajökull is in a typical preparation stage before an eruption but the temporal evolution and the outcome is unknown.

  • Increase in the geothermal activity with associated floods and gas release is a possible scenario."

A new vent at Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, that opened up in an housing estate (fissure 8 in Leilani) in Lower Puna on 3rd May 2018, continues to erupt vigorously producing highly voluminous lava flows that is flowing into the Ocean at Kapoho Bay, adding new land to Hawaii.

Yesterday (17 July 2018), a major littoral explosion occurred just offshore causing injuries to at least 22 passengers on board a Lava Ocean Tours vessel;

Another view of the explosion but much further away;

We (family, x7) have just returned from a Mt Teide holiday; dormant but stunning. The landscapes around the Teide peak are benign currently; but they tell of amazing volcanic activity hitherto.

The lava flows of the (in places, relatively recent) past are so well marked in the geology. I continue to be amazed and humbled.

Worldwide volcanic activity (in the past).

The scientists investigating the potential for eruption of Katla have slammed scaremongering by the Media and stressed they have not said an eruption is imminent.

Sometimes media can be very annoying whilst struggling to make a big story. Made a sucker out of me a few times.

However, given its pattern of recent centuries, Katla is overdue for an eruption. When it does blow, it is likely to have a big impact on western Europe, which is why there is so much interest in it.
