We've had some very useful rain over the past few days and not before time as far as the gardens are concerned.  Although we've had some very heavy showers and gusty winds that have dashed my mum's tulips, so they no longer provide the spectacular display of colour in her borders, but her lawn is quite colourful.

Started digging our garden pond out again yesterday, 6 years after filling it in and replacing it with a lawn. It`s going to be a big job to full reinstate it, probably a few months work. Like the original one it will be a wildlife pond, very shallow at one side with a beach area.

I`ve only got photo prints of the original, but I`ll try and scan and post a few on here.

That sounds like a good plan Eric.  I was looking at our pond today and thinking I'd like it moving but it would be a big job.

Some of you may remember me posting about the tragic death of my brother, three years ago. The week before he died, he'd bought two grape vines but never planted them, so I had them and they've fruited for the past two years.  I've been trying to get cuttings from them so I could give my mum one to plant in her garden.  I've spent two years nurturing cuttings in pots at different times of the year, some softwood and some hard wood, but they've failed every time.  So on Saturday my sis and I bought her one from Aldi.

Yesterday, I was doing a bit of weeding around the black grape vine and was just about to pull up some twigs when I realised they were the vine prunings I'd shoved into the soil when I pruned it last Autumn and they were sprouting!  I haven't removed them so I don't know if they've developed roots but the signs are good.

Well done with the vine shoots. Harvest will be bountiful one year.

Think i should contribute to this thread as i do like growing my own stuff. This year i have various herbs, tomatoes, garlic, Spring Onions, and as usual chilies

Sorry about the lack of effort/ quality in these shots, i was in a little rush earlier.

Here are my Tom's

Next to this next plant i also have Spring Onions..

Some Garlic, Chives, and Lemmon Thyme

I have quite a few chili plants all at various stages of growth so for now i will just like to show off my largest

I seem to recall mention earlier in the thread about slugs, but I can't seem to find it again. Has anybody got any ideas as to how to get rid of them? Some of my border plants have been destroyed. I'm resisting the temptation to go for slug pellets as I really don't want to poison birds. Some other quick fix solution would be most welcome!

P.S. Nice pics, ARTzeman and nice dogs too

I've heard perlite does the trick.

Copper strips  Available On Ebay...   Coffee grinds sometimes help.

The discussion about slugs was on page 27  http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/twocommunity/default.aspx?g=posts&m=680378#post680378

I think the best solution was nematodes but others were discussed.  I used coffee grounds last year to deter them but I found out , through this thread, that coffee also deters frogs, so if I have a problem this year I think nematodes will be my choice.

Thanks very much for the answers. Should be able to try the coffee and perlite straightaway and might order some nematodes too. Copper might also be worth a look, though, as I understand it, it needs to be rigged up carefully to stop them getting around it or over it.

I don't know why I couldn't find that page - I was looking much further back as I thought you'd been discussing slugs ages ago!

Nematode supplies are finite - last time I used them supplies ran out nationally by mid-August - but they did the job. I also discovered that some brands of potatoes seemed immune to slugs - I've grown Kestrel second earlies for three years now and they appear to do well with minimal slug damage.

Thanks - I better get cracking and order some!

Funnily enough, the slugs seem to leave my spuds alone. It's my flower garden that they attack.

Slugs and snails out in force last night. Just because I potted up some more dwarf runner beans. Peas are staying in the growing room at present...

I couldn`t get the text in the right place in the above post, but the photos show the pond, taken this morning, followed by original photos of the pond in 1994.

Is this bloody rain ever going to stop?

It's looking good Eric and it's filling in nicely!  No need for the hosepipe!

I like the way the original pond has a stoney area.  That's how my original pond was but we re-dug it and now it's more formal with paved edgings all the way round.  Last year, due to my baby hedgehog drowning disaster, I placed some stones around one of the marginal shelves so that anything falling into it can climb out and it looks a little more natural.

Let us have more photos of the progress with your new pond.

I`ll keep posting photos Caz, weather permitting. What I need to do next is hire a skip, there`s a mini mountain of soil and rubble to get rid of.
