The Weather Outlook

The last month has shown that here in Edinburgh at least, we just don't get wetter than average months any more and that is probably true for some other parts of the country as well, although there has been some areas of the UK which have actually been wetter than average recently.

Now that we have just entered in the final month of the meteorological autumn and the penultimate month of this month, this is now the month which will determine whether your location and the UK as a whole, has had a drier than average autumn overall or a wetter than average autumn which is very important as there are some areas particularly in NE Scotland, which are still in the process of recovering from the latest water scarcity crisis.

Here in Edinburgh, the rainfall deficit is very large and continues to grow even bigger, as every single month continues to be drier than average. As we are now into the penultimate month of the year, there is probably not enough time now for that deficit to be made up for this year.

The big question going into this month, is whether or not we can at least see some progress towards that. The model output for the first half of this month at least is unsettled and we are now in a relatively wet spell of weather but we have been on many occasions in recent months and every single time that this happens, the wetter weather never lasts for any length of time before it dries up yet again with the return to yet another high pressure dominated pattern.

As a result, I'm sure that for many people who have recently been impacted by the recent water scarcity crisis, these people will be hoping that this month ends up being the month in which this finally changes, thereby finally resulting in a wetter than average month at long last, especially given that a number of wetter than average months in succession are going to be needed in order for the deficit to be finally made up.

Regardless of how all of that pans out, this is the place to record those all important rainfall totals for your location during this month. Hopefully, there will be no further concerns about the lack of rainfall continuing any longer, but there is still a separate drought thread for such a discussion in case that is required. In the meantime, last month's thread is still available for anyone to post their final totals for October 2025.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

Total since 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 7.4 mm (as at 6:40 am GMT (06:40 UTC) this morning on Wednesday 12 November 2025)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 32.8 mm (44.5% of 1991-2020 November average)

Number of rain days during this month: 8 (62.2% of 1991-2020 November average)

Number of dry days during this month: 3

This means that only at least another 5 official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days. However, we are coming up to the halfway point in the month now and although this month so far has been relatively wet in comparison with other recent months, it's still not really been all that wet which means that this month could very easily end up being drier than average yet again, especially if we get yet another build of high pressure further down the line as has been the case so often in recent months.

Seasonal Data

Total for this autumn so far: 132.6 mm (62.7% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 32 (87.9% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of dry days during this autumn: 32

This means that only at least another 5 official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this autumn to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days. That is actually quite remarkable though given that this autumn so far has been dry once again in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. There's not much more than a couple of weeks left of this autumn and that isn't really enough time for the total for this autumn to even get close to reaching the 1991-2020 autumn average so in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, this autumn is clearly going to go down as being drier than average once again.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 494.4 mm (63.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 96 (69.9% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 171

I think it's safe to say that with only one month left of this year after this month, this year is going to go down as being substantially drier than average, and will probably end up being the driest year which I have ever recorded here on TWO since I first joined this forum back in the summer of 2016. Unlike with the monthly and seasonal data, the number of rain days is unlikely to save us either, so this year looks like being drier than average both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts and the number of rain days.

Note

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 29.6 mm

This makes yesterday our wettest day of this year so far.

Total since 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 1.6 mm (as at 10:40 am GMT (10:40 UTC) this morning on Thursday 13 November 2025)

Even as I write, light rain was still continuing to fall which means that the totals which I am currently reporting here are unlikely to be the actual latest totals.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 64.6 mm (87.7% of 1991-2020 November average)

Number of rain days during this month: 10 (77.8% of 1991-2020 November average)

Number of dry days during this month: 3

This means that only at least another 9.2 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, only at least another 3 official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

According to the latest model output, the next week is forecast to become much drier after today before becoming more unsettled again after that. Since we are not even halfway through the month yet, this month is therefore finally looking likely to go down as our first substantially wetter than average month for quite a long time. at long last.

Seasonal Data

Total for this autumn so far: 164.4 mm (77.7% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 34 (93.4% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of dry days during this autumn: 32

This means that only at least another 3 official rain days need to be recorded between now and the end of this autumn in order for this autumn to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 526.2 mm (67.1% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 98 (71.3% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 171

Total since 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 22.4 mm (as at 6:40 am GMT (06:40 UTC) this morning on Friday 14 November 2025)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 85.4 mm (116.0% of 1991-2020 November average)

Number of rain days during this month: 10 (77.8% of 1991-2020 November average)

Number of dry days during this month: 3

This means that although we're still not even halfway through the month yet, more rain has now already fallen during this month than the 1991-2020 November average and so regardless of what happens during the rest of this month, this month will now go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. This month will go down as our first wetter than average month since June but is only our second wetter than average month this year.

However, at least another 3 official rain days still need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this autumn so far: 185.2 mm (87.6% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 34 (93.4% of 1991-2020 autumn average)
