Perhaps it's more too do with the grass itself around these parts having adapted with only the fittest of the strongest taking ahold over the years. It's quite normal for our clay soils to be baked dry in a typical of summer. On average around 70 days off the 92 days of summer don't see rain.

Tomorrows rain (if it comes) will be very welcome.  Garden has already dried up rock hard like it was a few weeks ago

I'll salute the rain if it arrives. The BBC is again bullish about the prospects for meaningful precipitation.

Tonight will be cloudy and wet with outbreaks of rain moving in from the west, which will be heavy at times. It will be a breezy night.

I won't hold my breath, though. Very dry again here, with the soil dusty.

Over here, it's easy to forget that there was ever a drought. Even though it's a little less than two weeks since the rain started, you would be hard put to see signs of a drought now, except that some trees haven't recovered and some (beech trees in particular)are in full autumn mode. The grass is almost as green as ever. By last Friday , from recollection, we'd had something like 75mm. Until the rain returned, conditions here were nearly as bad as England(we were in Oxfordshire for a week around the middle of August so I can compare the two).

At last! A significant and for once under forecast amount of rain here. 16.5mm. Sadly I wasn't here to see it but seemed to have set it off everywhere as I drove through Kent, Surry, Hampshire and finally Dorset on my way to Christchurch.

How far north did it get in the end? Did it make Cambridge, Suffolk and Norfolk?

Hopefully some of the subsidence issues in the clay soils around here will be corrected now with yesterdays deluge.  Should get some good growth as well from the grass with a some sun and warmth over the next few days

Same here, 1.1mm from a 3 minute downpour from the line squall that went through. Other wise 15mm since June and 27.7C here today in a drying wind. Generally been mid 20's since drought "ended". A bit less sun at times and of course shorter days now.

SEPA have just released their latest water scarcity report which can be viewed here .

In accordance with last week's warnings, four areas in Scotland which include NE Fife, parts of Tayside and even extending into the south of Aberdeenshire have had their water scarcity status upgraded all the way up to significant water scarcity status with water extraction restrictions being imposed in those areas as a result.

However, that has actually ended up being the only blot on the landscape this week in what is otherwise, a much better week overall due to some further recent rainfall.

As a result, those parts of the Borders which were at significant water scarcity status last week have now had their status downgraded to moderate water scarcity status with all water extraction restrictions also being lifted in those areas. Furthermore and unlike in other recent weeks, there are no fresh warnings this week about any other areas possibly having their status upgraded all the way up to significant water status in the next week.

In addition to that, Edinburgh has now finally had its status downgraded from moderate water scarcity status to alert status along with the Loch Earn catchment area and a small part of SW Scotland. These areas have now joined Morayshire, the north of Aberdeenshire and the city of Aberdeen itself at alert status.

Finally, two more areas in the west of Scotland have now completely returned to normal status although the Shetland Islands continue to remain at early warning status along with the far SW of Scotland, parts of Galloway and a large part of central Scotland.

Meanwhile, East Lothian along with the Borders, the rest of Fife, Tayside and most of the south of Aberdeenshire continue to remain at moderate water scarcity status whilst all areas which haven't been mentioned so far are at normal status.

Whilst these developments are very welcome, much more in the way of persistent rain will be needed in order for the recovery to continue. River levels are still very low in the east of Scotland, especially in those areas which are currently at significant water scarcity status.

Groundwater levels also remain very low in the east of Scotland, but normal or above normal elsewhere.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
