It's not even lunchtime yet as I write but today is already our warmest day of this summer so far with a temperature of 23.1°C as at 11am BST (10:00 UTC) this morning at Edinburgh Gogarbank where the temperature only needs to rise by at least another 0.6°C to give us our warmest day of the year so far.

Swanston in south Edinburgh has reached 25.7 C at Noon. By far our warmest day of the year so far. The last time we got this high was 26.2 C on 8th September 2023.

Back in July 2022, Swanston recorded 30.7 C and 30.5 C on the 18th and 19th July

I believe Edinburgh recorded 31 C back in 1975 too although I stand to be corrected

Rather frustratingly, there's a bit too much cloud around here in Edinburgh just now and as a result of that, the temperatures for the time being at least, are refusing to rise any further.😡

Too much cloud is that same enemy which in winter, all too often prevents us from getting a frost at night and at this time of the year on a summer's day, this can be what ends up scuppering our chances of getting any daytime temperature records.

Given that this has been such a sunny year up until now, this had to happen on a day where there is the chance of us getting our hottest day on record which is just like the thing.😡

Breezy and bright with a covering of thin high cloud, which will keep the heat in. 29.2c in the garden right now.

Still a lot of high cloud around and quite breezy but feeling very warm. Interesting to see Bude near the top of the temperature charts today with 29C - not often that warm right on the Atlantic coast!

It's now 30.1c in the shady part of the garden, still overcast with high cloud but a bit thicker than an hour ago, very white rather than pale, milky, blue.

Those clouds from a short while ago have now broken up to allow yet more sunshine through and as a result, the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has now gone up to 24.2°C which now makes today our warmest day of this year so far.

Whether or not we actually get our all time June record is another matter. In order to beat that, the temperature here in Edinburgh needs to rise above 27.8°C (according to Jerry from the south of Edinburgh in a post which he put out on the MO thread on 16 June 2025) with that record going all the way back to 1982.

The temperatures will still need to rise a bit further in order for that to even have a chance of actually happen but if the Sun can now stay out for the rest of today, that is still perfectly doable.

It's getting close John, we've reached 26.3 C at Swanston by 1400. Not sure the Met Office recognise Swanston? It'll have to come from Gogarbank or the Botanics.

In any case, I'm enjoying a hot and humid day in Edinburgh

Looks like Aberdeen, Aboyne and Aviemore have reached 27 C

Breezy 28C

Not to humid with a dp of 16C

Looking at the cloud types i wouldn't be surprised if we saw a shower/ storm in the next 12 hrs or so.

Looks like Newcastle Airport has hit 30 C

We are stuck between 25-26 C as considerable cloud has developed. I can see a Cumulonimbus way to my SE towards the Lammermuir hills.

Seriously though, the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is now up to 25.2°C which now gives us our first 25+°C maximum of this year. That is something which didn't happen at all at any point in time last year, so it's now hotter here today than at any point in time last year which just goes to show how poor last summer was in that regard compared to other recent years which now already includes this year.

If we are going to see a new June record today, that is most likely to happen at Gogarbank as the temperature at the botanics is slightly pegged back to 22.5°C by a slight breeze from the NNE.

Nevertheless, the temperature at the airport is currently around 26°C which means that Gogarbank isn't even the hottest of my three local stations today.

EDIT

As I've posted all of that, the clouds have come back and we need them to go away and stay away if we're to have any chance of getting that June record.😡

That same site is now showing the temperature there dropping back to 25.0°C, probably due to that cloud cover which has returned and which now looks set to complete scupper those record chances.😡

That may be an automatic sensor. I believe the site also has a standard Stevenson's Screen

From that, I then assumed that the station which shows up on weatherobs.com with that identifier (in order to see that, you have set the option in weatherobs.com to allow amateur stations to be seen) was also the same station, especially since it is appearing in exactly the same location on the map. Because of that, I'm now sure why that data at weatherobs.com doesn't appear to be consistent with the data on the Swanston homepage, or on other linked sites such as the Met Office WOW site.

With yet another burst of sunshine, the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has now shot up to 27.7°C as at 3:30pm BST (14:30 UTC) this afternoon which now brings us within a whisker of that all time June record from 1982 and even if that highest ten minute reading doesn't go up any further from here, the raw data at 18z and 21z which confirms today's actual maximum temperature could yet beat that record, and even seems very likely to do so now.

Regardless of whether that record is beaten or not though, today is already probably our hottest June day since 1982 which is very impressive indeed.

Thankfully here, and unlike yesterday, the wind has arrived from the sea - yesterday was forecast to have ENE'lies but they didn't arrive. Today they have, and it's 23.6 outside with a dewpoint of 17.8. The high so far is 24.9.

I can now confirm that Edinburgh has just had its hottest June day on record with a temperature of 27.9°C as at 4pm BST (15:00 UTC) this afternoon at Edinburgh Gogarbank, with the previous record having gone all the way back to 1982 (the actual confirmed maximum temperature for today will no doubt be even higher than that).

Whilst this is all very interesting from a weather observer's perspective though, this is not something which I take any actual joy in reporting given the very dangerous path which we are now treading as regards to climate change, and the frequent high temperature records such as this one which keep on arising from that.
