So what will May bring? April has been another well above average month - the warmth just seems effortless these days. Will May follow suit? Will we get one of those rarest of beasts a cooler than average month?! I know where my money is!

That puts April 3rd in the CET record, behind the record busters that were 2007 and 2011. Less than 20 years ago this would have been the warmest April on record, and that despite some cold nights. In the maxima, we were pipped by the two record years and also 1893, but of course this last had a mean minimum over a degree lower than this year.

Incidentally, for max CET, none of the named years beat this year for highest daytime temperature. I've scrolled back every year to 1970 and then checked the notorious 40s and also 1893; only 2003 had a higher daytime max. of 25.1°C on 16th. 19th in 2018 came 3rd with 24.4 just beat by 0.1 by this year on 30th.

Interestingly several Aprils in the 1940s- not just the record breaking 1949- and also several other years with high (21+) temps, including 2003 had their highest daytime max on 16th.

Sorry- this should be in April thread; just got carried away when I saw Gav's post.
