I think the sensible figure is the month to date one. In the first half of the year the temperatures are likely (caveat: some recent months swim upstream on this) to be lower than later. Therefore it's really useful to know how we compare to the same time in other years. So thanks to Gavin for this.
But agree it's not easy to compare when one 3 decade period is used in a different way to another.

If we get a proper heatwave at the end of the month I reckon there would be a good chance of beating the all time record of 15.1C, which is in itself over a degree higher than the 2nd placed month.
