Spring Sun Winter Dread

Have we ever had a really warm April that was also dull and wet ?
Every one I can think of off the top of my head was also dry /sunny

It feels like March to Sept is the period of the year when warm synoptics normally favour dry and fine weather , this obviously flips on its head for autumn and winter (eg frankly most autumn and winters we've had in last 30 or so years , especially the ones just gone!)

And April is when the average temperature is rising at its quickest. Possibly some cooler nights coming later in the month but could well be offset by warm days if we get lots of sunshine

Ooh.  With the mild weather today, I’d be surprised if it isn’t over 11c tomorrow.

Using Manchester as a proxy, with a min of 8 forecast, you'd be looking at dead on 11 tomorrow. I think you're right, it'll be a couple of tenths higher than that...

Surprised to see the CET so high , it doesn't feel anywhere near the level of 2007 or 2011 yet  statistically it's clearly not far off already hitting the levels for the whole month on those occasions . In a month which is notorious for getting warmer later and almost always seems to deliver a widespread 22-25c plus period in second half these days
I guess we are conditioned to expect April to be warm these days . Very few cool ones since the 1980s and 2021 therefore stood out like a sore thumb

The thing about April 2007 was that the wonderful April that was - was followed by a truly diabolical summer.   🙂

Well, we are very early into the month, so it could change.  But the past few days of mild weather has made all the difference and may not reflect the month as a whole.

It would take a pretty potent cold spell later in the month to drive the figure down to my prediction of 9.52C and nobody surely would want that. After coming within a whisker of winning in January my predictions have gone down the pan and this month looks to be no exception.

Yes, with the current output, I think you’re right. We’d need a few frosty nights and at the moment they look non existent.  It seems very much like the first week of April has set the bar a little too high, even for my 10.8c guess.

Almost touching the record levels again... yesterday was as warm as the average late June day.

As we said, no surprise it’s standing so high because it really was a lovely day yesterday.  Looks like making 12c in the next few days.   The rise will probably steady off a bit but it looks like only Tuesday could actually stop the rise next week and only temporarily at that.  We’ll be mid-month by then and any dip in temperatures will make less of an impact on the monthly average.  A record breaker perhaps?

Blimey. My guess has already gone to the dogs (9.9) 😂.

Still early days, but what are the chances we beat April 2011?
