Yes July/August less than ideal especially these days, but first year I have through necessity had to go in the school holidays  having a school aged child and wanting to go away for more than a week.

We've generally favoured May/early June for Med holidays and, whenever we've had to holiday in the summer holidays, we've gone Canaries. It's rarely outside of 27-33c, and always a breeze.

I went to Turkey in mid February. Interesting as the interior was snowbound as seen from a train but the coastal areas beautiful and springlike with flowers one associates with the UK in April. Comfortable walking weather and the Classical ruins outstanding. Myra (Lycia) was a highlight of course. And the crowds non existent. Can't understand why people visit in the heat of the summer apart from it’s the only practical time for many.

Yes it is, normally.

There is also an increase risk of thunderstorms later in the month (and especially October) which can be really fun to watch/experience, although they can be a hit or a miss.

so sad to see the problems Europe are having to deal with at the moment, just wish I could send some of our weather their way.

I see the conspiracy theorists on Twitter have now decided that the temperatures being reported in southern Europe last month were ground temperatures and it was actually much cooler.

After the recent & near-term break that I imagine was welcomed by many on the mainland, looks to be an impressively hot airmass taking shape across south-western Europe next Wed-Fri. Remains to be seen how that moves about and to what extent the UK becomes directly involved.

While I'll be moaning about temperatures in the high 20s tomorrow onwards, spare a thought for those in Seville. The firestorm conditions are back! From the 12z GFS today, for posterity - this shows 4% RH!

47C, dew of -3 and a gusty westerly wind. Awful, deadly conditions.

I'm in Pisa-Florence-Siena area for 2 weeks and although I missed the 40 C experience it's warmed up nicely again. 30 C yesterday and 33 C today

Even here in Edinburgh, we've had temperatures of over 24°C at the botanic gardens with blazing sunshine, making it actually hotter here today than what it was at any point in time during the entire month of August.

It's therefore just a shame that you're out of the country altogether just now and missing out on that although I hope that are enjoying your time away anyway.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

September looks like delivering classic heat on the continent and here. I'll keep this thread on here til October and then move it to the classics section so it can used for reference purposes as I intended.   🙂

Thanks John. Some of the long range forecasts (GFS) still show it warm and dry when i get back on the 14th! Meanwhile, the Italian Met Service and our Met Office keep the weather hot for Tuscany throughout my stay,  30 C+ every day 😎

Nice to see that you're getting some lovely sunshine over there, but temperatures of above 30°C every day would probably be too much for me to be able to handle (I'm sweltering here, even with temperatures in the mid-20s°C here in Edinburgh, so I wouldn't like to imagine what it would be like with temperatures in the 30s°C or possibly even the 40s°C (as it has been on many parts of the continent fairly recently) all the time.

7th day 30 C + here in Northern Italy. That might not be too unusual in September. Nice easterly breeze in Siena. Mostly sunny throughout 😎

Day 10 of +30 C and blue sky here in Italy

Florence and Siena showing 34 C today. Early and late activity with a siesta in the afternoon! Plenty of shade in the cities but a 6km walk to a hilltop village was a challenge.

Before you do, a few mad little forecast numbers for the end of the month.

Southern Spain and Portugal modelled to get maxima from Thursday of: 35, 36, 37, 37 (that's 1st October), 36, 35, 34, 34, 35.

Without doubt the hottest first week of October on record. The October Spanish record is 38.2C in 2014, so we could see this threatened. But it's the sheer persistence of the heat that is most remarkable.

France will get in on the action too. Maxima in S and SW France for the same days are forecast at: 32, 34, 34, 34 (1 Oct), 35, 31, 30, 30, 31. France's October all time record is 32C from 2011.

I'm flying out to Carcassonne on Friday - the forecast for Sunday 1st is 34c on the BBC weather app! Totally bonkers weather.
