A very cold and frosty start to this morning after what has turned out to be our coldest March night at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 12 March 2013 and our coldest night there since 13 December 2022 with the overnight minimum temperature getting down to -9°C at Edinburgh Airport and -7.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

However, that has also led us into another bright and sunny start to the day and the temperatures have also responded to that sunshine by jumping up to around -1°C here in Edinburgh as at  9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning.

A tiny amount of overnight snow has already disappeared. Cold, wet and breezy.

My time-lapse for yesterday: a bright and clear, but cold March day.

I'll be honest, I'm never a fan of these cold snaps in spring, but you do have to respect the clarity and cleanness of an Arctic air mass.

We had quite a few hours of very light snow but it did nothing other than wet the surfaces

I assume there is no daily current conditions?

Anyway, thought of posting this in the Unusual Weather Conditions" Thread

Last night there was rain which turned to heavy wet snow with temperatures down to +1.6c in early hours then heavy rain at 0800am at +0.5c this morning melting snow, despite it being colder (odd) - or that slushy mix on the grass here in Okehampton but nearby hills and moors were covered white with proper snow.

As I drove toward Exeter for work (30 miles east) it was all rain and it got greener and greener. Rain turned heavier mid morning despite temperatures remaining around +3 mark. This evening the temperature in Exeter was +3c at 18:00 and I drove back to Okehampton (30 miles west on edge of DARTMOOR) along a30 and all that snow on side or slushy deposit which fell early hours had melted and temperature was actually much warmer at +8c in Okehampton (200m asl) yet it was actually colder in Exeter by some +4.0c all day into evening- but there was no snow in Exeter or not reported. My only guess as to why Exeter held onto cold longer is that it's further east where the cold airmass stuck around longer but yet didn't turn rain to snow?

Bizarre eh? - TBH South and SW never really got into the cold airmass we never made it to freezing! - At least I saw some snow early hours but wasn't enough and shame we never had these eventful weather patterns in the winter.

ANYWAY, Nice to see some interesting weather after a month or so of nothingness!

Currently drizzle plus +8.5c here in Okehampton.

I suggested we could go weekly with the current conditions theme as I've noticed more often than not that whenever one of us started a daily thread, there was just the one post by the actual poster the whole day, so might as well cut down on clutter.

Anyway, back to the here and now, just seen off a particularly soggy Wednesday with 16 mm of rain. Another perfect Winter synoptic that has got lost on here at my coastal location.

That of course, is only part of the story because after I had started the first couple of weekly threads, no-one else was remembering to do that and so, that was when one of the mods (DEW) stepped in and agreed to start these threads once a week on a Sunday as has been the case since then.

Anyway, we have the unusual situation here in Edinburgh just now where I have about 1 cm of lying snow here in NW Edinburgh whilst the south of Edinburgh has missed out on that altogether so far according to Jerry.

Now, the wind direction has gone back round to the north again which means that those snow showers which are still out over the North Sea are no longer actually reaching us here in Edinburgh (not good news for Jerry of course, as the south of Edinburgh will now need to wait that bit longer before it gets any of that white stuff).

However, there is still a lot of cloud around which means that it isn't as cold as it was 24 hours ago, although it is still very cold for the time of year with the temperature hovering at around -3°C here in Edinburgh.

It's gradually warmed through the night here, with further rain at times. 4.3, dew 3.7, with the promise of plenty more rain to come!

9.4mm yesterday, the wettest day since the 16th January.

EDIT: And related to that, the first time it's been below 1000hPa since the 18th January!

Due to there being a lot of cloud cover, last night wasn't as cold as the preceding night before then but even with that, today has still got off to a very cold start for this time of the year with the overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Airport still getting down to around -6°C.

That has helped to preserve our snow cover from the overnight period for now but the skies are now clearing from the north and it shouldn't be long now before the Sun finally appears here.

For now though, the temperature here in Edinburgh at 8am GMT (08:00 UTC) was around -3° here in Edinburgh.

Dull and wet with light but persistent rain where I've gone past the 6 mm mark so far today, also the cloud base is low enough to shroud the ADSA building at 100 ft ASL normall seen from my famed west-facing hobby room window.

Our lovely blue sky to our north is now very quickly disappearing as more cloud has come in from the south, so we are back to mostly overcast conditions once again with nothing happening in terms of our actual weather.

However, that hasn't prevented the temperature from rising to around 2°C here in Edinburgh as at 11am GMT (11:00 UTC) this morning. This has led to a gradual thaw of lying snow which is enough for our very slender covering of snow from last night to have now already largely disappeared.

The models today showed temperatures rising some 3C in an hour down here, as the much milder air pushes north (remember, the boundary between mild and cold is very steep, the freezing level rises by a kilometre or more as it arrives).

And so, it's actually happened: 6.4C an hour ago, 9.9C now (and with a 9.9 dewpoint too, it's quite misty out there now).

Remarkable, the sort of thing that normally happens in a continental climate!

Blimey! While writing this, it's warmed by 0.2C: now 10.1, dew 10.0.
