Given the extreme heat we had in the summer and now this cold spell, I wonder if this year could be a contender for the greatest range in temperatures? 40°C in summer, then -20-something in December would definitely be something to remember this year for.

That's exactly where I'm getting the readings! Lee (highlandweather) makes all of his amazing network of stations available at that URL. I also scan the stations on Weather Underground.

As at 11pm GMT (23:00 UTC) tonight, the temperature here in Edinburgh was already down to -4.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and around -6°C at Edinburgh Airport.

This means that tonight will now go down as our coldest night of this entire year so far, regardless of what happens between now and the end of the night (which is officially the start of the next observation day at 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) tomorrow morning).

The lowest official value I have seen so far is -15.6°C although a number of stations in Aberdeenshire have minima below -17°C.

My garden thermometer is at -9 C this morning. Looks like Edinburgh Airport is the same.

Lowest on the Weatheronline hourly list is currently Aviemore at -12.8C but that doesn’t show all the stations in Scotland.

I presume none of those -17C stations are official Met Office ones?

Almost, but not quite.

The lowest temperature at Edinburgh Airport according to the overnight half-hourly METAR data which is produced at 20 minutes past the hour and 10 minutes to the hour was -8°C, although that was still more than enough to give us our coldest night of this entire year so far.

Even at Edinburgh Gogarbank though, the overnight minimum temperature was -6.75°C and as I write, the temperature there as at 8am GMT (08:00 UTC) was still at -6.53°C.

Yes, but the Braemar value is an official Met Office one.

-5.3⁰C at home in the city just now, much colder inland a bit.

We hit the dizzy heights of -8C for 10 minutes before it’s on its way down again , now that’s an ICE day !! , way it’s looking we might not go above freezing until Friday .  Spey is beginning to freeze over, it’s likely that -20C and below could well be achieved tonight as some places already -15 C

Scotland on course for coldest December in a decade

Scotland is on course to record its coldest December in over a decade after temperatures plummeted to -15.7C overnight in Aberdeenshire.

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said the temperature at Braemar made it the coldest since February 2021.
A yellow warning for ice and snow currently covers northern Scotland with the cold spell set to last for 10 days.
