Since we have just entered into a brand new month, it is now time for another new thread for precipitation.

We have just had a wet autumn which finished with a wetter than average November, and I'm not sure whether or not there are actually any parts of the UK where this wasn't the case. However, we have now entered into a much drier period of weather and the immediate outlook is for it to be fairly dry.

A lot of people will be relieved about that after the recent wet weather, but it must also be borne in mind that even after that wet autumn, we still haven't even come close to actually making up the rainfall deficit which had built up for such a long period before then. As a result, we still need to be getting a lot more rain during this winter in order for this rainfall deficit to be made up and to reduce any possible fears about possible water shortages going into next summer.

However, the model output is very interesting at the moment because if that is correct, there is a good chance that a lot of the precipitation which falls over the coming few weeks coild end up falling as snow. It should be borne in mind as well that even if that happens, anything which falls as snow still counts as part of the overall rainfall total (there is a means of converting snow depth or snow melt to the equivalent rainfall amount although for most stations, that will probably just come through anyway on either the raw SYNOP/BUFR or for here in Scotland, from the data from SEPA when that happens. Totals which are derived in this manner should therefore still still be reported here along with everything else.

However this month pans out in terms of rainfall and whether or not any of that falls as snow, this is the place to report those all important totals.

Another unmitigated horror show with 53.2mm already 🤢

Yesterday was the 25th day with over 10mm this year - the most in any year in my 17 years of records - and 17 of those have occurred since the start of September an utterly horrrific period which has seen 480mm in 14 weeks 🤢

852.6mm for the year making it the 3rd wettest in my records after 2009 (895.6mm), 2014 (875.6mm) and 2021 (865.8mm) and a good chance of it finishing the wettest 🤢

It's been even drier than that here with a total of 20.4 mm of rain being recorded for this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with just 13.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

After the water scarcity situation at the end of the summer as classified by SEPA back then, a wet winter has badly been needed in order to replenish the reservoir and ground water levels and at least make up some of that deficit, especially given that the autumn wasn't actually all that much wetter than average here and not as wet as it was elsewhere in the UK.

That wet autumn has clearly been just a mere blip in the overall dry pattern which we've been experiencing for quite a long time now and so with not much more than a week left until the end of this month, these figures are very concerning indeed because unless we start to get some serious rainfall soon, I fear that we are going to be in very serious trouble as regards to the overall water scarcity situation going into next spring and summer.

85m.to date most of it since Sunday morning .
We are on 960 for the year to date so at least 10 percent above the LTA . Incredible considering the drought summer but the rainfall in Nov was staggering  that month alone accounting for approx a third of the annual total

Typical 'wet' day here with 10-12mm forecast but in fact less than 3mm and it stopped by 8pm not midnight.
Month now on 30mm and year 449mm unlikely to be more than 5mm or so by New Year I would wager.
So anther dry month and very dry year.
Only September with 66mm managed to be above average, by a whole 3mm.

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total Up To 9am GMT this morning (09:00 UTC): 5.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 6.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

No point in me giving the totals since 9am this morning as there hasn't been any further rainfall during that period.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far:  30.8 mm (41.1% of 1991-2020 December average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 21.4 mm (31.7% of 1991-2020 December average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this month so far:  7 (53.5% of 1991-2020 December average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7 (56.9% of 1991-2020 December average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of dry days during this month so far:  10 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

We had a couple of wet days on 22 and 23 December 2022 but with only a week to go until the end of this month after today, that is unlikely to be enough to prevent this month from being yet another dry month to end what is clearly going to a substantially drier than average year in the end.

Seasonal Data

Total for this Winter so far:  30.8 mm (14.7% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 21.4 mm (11.6% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this Winter so far:  7 (18.9% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7 (20.3% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of dry days during this Winter so far:  10 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

Annual Data

Number of rain days during this year so far:  126 (91.7% of 1991-2020 year average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 116 (90.4% of 1991-2020 year average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh are as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total Up To 9am GMT this morning (09:00 UTC): 7.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 8.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far:  44.6 mm (59.6% of 1991-2020 December average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 32.2 mm (47.8% of 1991-2020 December average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this month so far:  9 (68.8% of 1991-2020 December average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 9 (73.2% of 1991-2020 December average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of dry days during this month so far:  10 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

This means that just another 5 or more rain days now needs to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

In addition to that, just another 4 or more rain days now needs to be recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days.

However, there are only 5 days left of this month after today, so I will be very surprised if either of those targets are actually met in the end and despite the wetter and more unsettled spell of weather which we're currently experiencing, this still looks like being a drier than average month in the end.

Seasonal Data

Total for this Winter so far:  44.6 mm (21.3% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 32.2 mm (17.4% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
