On the local lunchtime news just now there were plenty of flooding reports, mostly in Dumfries & Galloway but also the Borders and the Central Belt. 70mm in 24hrs reported in the Borders but not verified yet. Over 30 flood warnings in southern Scotland with a peak late afternoon. Thankfully the rain has now eased away eastwards.

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total Up To 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 20.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 17.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

That makes yesterday our wettest day of this winter so far.

Total since 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 13.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 11.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (as at 3pm GMT (15:00 UTC) this afternoon on Friday 30 December 2022

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 90.0 mm (120.2% of 1991-2020 December average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 72.2 mm (107.1% of 1991-2020 December average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this month so far:  14 (107.0% of 1991-2020 December average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 14 (113.8% of 1991-2020 December average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of dry days during this month so far:  10 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

More rain has now fallen during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1991-2020 December average for that particular station and so this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.
In addition to that, more rain has also now fallen during this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than the 1991-2020 December average for that particular station and so this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.
Yet until only about a week ago, this month was actually looking like a dead cert to end up being substantially drier than average, so this past week just goes to show how much things can change, even in a very short period of time.

Furthermore, more official rain days have now been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this month than the 1991-2020 December average and so, this month will go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.
Finally, more official rain days have now also been recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this month than the 1991-2020 December average and so, this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far:  90.0 mm (43.1% of 1991-2020 winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 72.2 mm (39.0% of 1991-2020 winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this winter so far:  26 (71.2% of 1991-2020 winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 25 (71.2% of 1991-2020 winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of dry days during this winter so far:  10 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 710.8 mm (90.6% of 1991-2020 annual average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 633.8 mm (87.1% of 1991-2020 annual average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this year so far:  133 (96.8% of 1991-2020 annual average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 134 (104.2% of 1991-2020 annual average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of dry days during this year so far:  167 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 168 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

As there are not enough days left in this year for it to be possible bring the number of official rain days at Edinburgh Gogarbank up to the 1991-2020 annual average for that particular station, this year will now go down  as being drier than average there in terms of the number of rain days, regardless of what happens there between now and the end of this year.
However, more official rain days have now been recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this year than the 1991-2020  annual  average and so, this year will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

Nevertheless and although December 2022 has been wetter than average overall, this is still unlikely to be enough to prevent 2022 from going down as a substantially drier than average year overall at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

The Nith in the Whitesands area of Dumfries has a severe flood warning ('danger to life'). Plenty of 'ordinary' flood warnings in SW Scotland, the Borders and one for the Lake District.

The last two days has brought some 33 mm  making a month total of  175 mm and a bit more to come before mid night  . Extraordinary that we have had nearly 20 inches of rain since the start of November must be the wettest such period on record around here  . The year will end up one of the wettest despite the long drought of the Summer . . We will end the year with an excess of some 30 percent above the lta . Remarkable
