That what I like to see those subzero temps here and blizzards conditions from the east or north.  Since my memory of very few snow events here after 1991 really miss out most of my life time as my memories alwasy fresh from the 1980;s to 1991, then Feb 2009 that all, rest was poor and little snow around and less cold temps.  I and my wife plan to go abroad up to 1 week per winter to see the snow, we going to try Lapland and rent a holiday apartment for a week which cost £61 per night than hotels which charging a lot more.  At least to see the snow and fill up my memory of snow yearly.  Americans, Canadian and Europeans have more snow memories from seeing snow every year.

Sea ice in the Gulf of Mexico would be something to see! Perhaps we'll see icebergs floating our way in the Gulf Stream🤣

But more seriously, a weather expert on BBC pm was saying that the cold air layer was rather shallow. The interview rather broke down because the BBC interviewer turned out to be trying to find out whether it would be too cold for planes to fly at 30,000 feet and the interviewee was talking about something much shallower, 5,000 feet if I heard it right. Did I? Does anyone have a source for temperature profiles with altitiude?

Looks horrendous on that webcam now... and I'm green with envy.

Would so love that in the UK

Incredible weather! Last week and week before was our fun time and this week is USA's fun time!

On the flip side NYC didn't see any snow - apparently started off very wet this morning at +13c with rain and dropped to -5 this evening and a further fall to -13c tonight but the rain stopped just before it got cold enough for snow and from now on it will be bone dry but bitterly cold. NYC has had a temperature drop of almost 20c in what 15 hrs. wow wow wow! 😮

Thanks for sharing - I scrolled back time and went to earlier in the day - amazing eventful day weatherwise there! and this is the sort of weather I miss which i use to experience in Alberta when I lived there 1 year. I love how it started off as rain and then stopped, got brighter and then clouded over with wet snow huge wet flakes and then became more and more powdery as temperatures plummeted below freezing and then drifted leaving a dusting!

That so called winter storm really pointless for snow rampers there as they will enjoy the snowfall now but after few days mild weather will return and wipe them out quickly.  Toronto going to see 9C next week with rain like UK experiencing it now.

It's still 5 days of  extreme cold weather with severe blizzards over Christmas, I would take that every year without disappointment.  If you want constant snow and cold temps you have to go further North.  Quebec city has a fantastic climate and warm incursions are much more limited with deep snow on the ground all winter.  Go SW to Montreal and it's a bit more dodgy and then Toronto even more so.
Quebec and Newfoundland have the best N America winter weather IMO but I would also take Buffalo and sacrifice some melt for the extreme lake effect snow.

Yes as Toronto is lot further south and more less snow over London and Windsor.  When I went there before it was crap snow cover but more when we went to Niagara Falls as there some lake effects snow and more deeper.

Toronto also sit by the lake but no effect since the winds always blow from the west over the land. Need SE winds to that but very rare so Buffalo get the most.

As much as I like snow, that Buffalo blizzard is just terrifying. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen outside of Antarctica. I’m more than happy to watch it from a distance.

My ideal climate would probably be costal New England - warm but not too hot summers, cold but not frigid winters. Occasional snow but not the 80 inch ridiculousness of the Great Lakes.

I think I would enjoy it until the power went off, -15c and stuck with no heating or electric for days over Christmas would be pretty miserable.
Then again if the streamer set up a few miles North or South would also be unhappy, so perhaps there is no pleasing me, snow lovers are a strange breed.

The warnings are in a different league over there 'Travel will be inpossible'. Like one Buffalo resident said it's ok people saying they are used to it, but you can't really get used to paralysis of everything.

Noticed some Estate agents list a benefit of the North of Buffalo as being less prone to extreme snowfalls as the streamers usually effect the south of the city. The reverse has happened with this event.

This weather system affected many states, all the way down to the south too. My daughter's currenty in Tampa, Florida and they awoke on Saturday morning to a temperature of just 1c, she's used to temperatures like this but her boyfriend and his family are not!
